Paul Greaney Obituary

Paul M. "Pat" Greaney, 63, of Worcester and Kennebunkport, Maine, a retired Detective Lieutenant in the Massachusetts State Police, died Saturday, May 14, 2011 after being stricken ill at his home in Maine.

He leaves his wife of 40 years, Kathleen E. (Foley) Greaney; three children, Christine M. Sawyer and her husband Mark of Paxton, Patrick M. Greaney and his wife Tara of Holden, and Tara F. Price and her husband Chris of Leicester; 11 grandchildren, Katie, Joey, Jake, Liam, Lizzie and Mark Sawyer; Ryan, Troy and Danny Greaney; and Ella and Gracie Price; two brothers, Stephen T. Greaney and his wife Joan of Worcester and Michael J. Greaney and his wife Amy of West Yarmouth as well as many nephews and nieces.

Pat was born in Worcester, son of Paul J. and Bernice D. (Ambrose) Greaney. He graduated from St. Peter's High School and then continued his education at Merrimack College in North Andover. He earned a master's degree in Criminal Justice from Anna Maria College in Paxton.

Pat began his career with the Massachusetts State Police in 1970 stationed in the western part of the state. He later transferred to central Massachusetts and spent several years as a State Police detective assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney's office. Pat later transferred to the State Police Special Services Section investigating organized crime in the Commonwealth. Pat rose through the ranks over the years holding supervisory positions of Corporal, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Lieutenant and Detective Lieutenant. He completed his career in 1996 as the Commanding Officer of the Special Services Section overseeing the statewide organized crime unit, fugitive unit, gang unit and Governor's Security detail. He was the recipient of numerous awards and commendations throughout his career. He was a member of the State Police Assn. of Mass., the Mass. Pat had many interests. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends at Goose Rocks Beach as well as lobstering off the Maine coast. He loved following sports, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was an avid golfer and member at Wachusett Country Club. However, his greatest joy was attending his own children's and grandchildren's games. Above all, he loved his wife, his children and adored his grandchildren.

How can I describe a friend, fellow trooper, and all-round good guy? We played sports together, locked up the bad-guys, and enjoyed what we did. From SP Sturbridge, and beyond, no one ever stepped up to a challenge faster than Pat.
My family offers our deepest sympathy to Kate, and her family.

Greaney family,

Over the years I think back to the countless trips I made out to my shed, never really needing anything in it, but rather only hoping to see Pat in the yard and hear him say "Hi Russ. How are ya kid?" For then I knew we'd strike up a conversation about the town, local politics, or how many of the kids and grandkids were coming up for the weekend. Conversations I'll miss dearly.

We continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

With Love, your neighbors, the Grady's
