Peter A Jones, 91

Colchester, VT - Peter A. Jones, age 91, passed away on January 23, 2019, at the McClure Miller Respite House in Colchester. He was born on February 4, 1927, in Worcester, MA, to the late Ernest and Ida (Qeleshi) Jones. He was raised in Worcester, and graduated from South High School in 1945. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. He was stationed at Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn, NY, and Seaside Heights, NJ.

At the completion of his duty, he earned his bachelor's degree in business from Bowling Green State University, and his master's degree in education at Worcester State. He came to Vermont in 1963, where he began teaching business at Burlington High School, until he retired in 1992. In addition to teaching, he worked at the Elizabeth Lund Home as a tutor, and worked as a counselor for the Neighborhood Youth Corp. From 1976 – 2011, Peter could also be found shuttling cars for Hertz Rental.

Peter's most favorite area of discussion was taxes and the stock market. He volunteered as an AARP Tax Aide for 27 years. He loved to share his expertise and offer tax and investment advice to all who knew him. He was a member of the Vermont Education Association, the Elks (BPOE) Lodge #916, the Masons (Washington Lodge #3 F. & A.M.), and the American Legion. He attended North Avenue Alliance Church for many years. One of his proudest moments was when he took part in the Honor Flight for World War II Veterans in October, 2016.

He married Pearl Margretta (Haley) Jones on July 28, 1968, and she survives him. They met at Burlington High School as they both taught in the business department. He is also survived by his two daughters, Sandra LaBombard and husband Todd of Burlington, and Catherine Thomas, and husband Alan of Findlay, Ohio; three grandsons, Bradley and Steven LaBombard, and Andrew Sorg; and two step-grandchildren, Ashley LaBombard, and Michael LaBombard and wife Lyndsay, and their daughter Cassidy. He is also survived by his nieces Margaret Abboud and Elizabeth Kretovic, and nephews, Ernest and George Jr. Besides his parents, Peter was predeceased by his sister, Margaret, and brothers, George and John Jones.

Funeral services and burial were held in Vermont. In lieu of flowers memorial remembrances in his name can be made to St Mary Albanian Church, 535 Salisbury Street, Worcester, 01609.

Dear Pearl and family,
Heartfelt sympathy to you and yours as you face the loss of one so cherished. Peter always had a smile and a kind word whenever I saw him and had the chance to chat. Our son, Ryan, really enjoyed having Peter as a teacher at BHS and claims it is Mr. Jones who made him fast and accurate on the keyboard! Peter certainly gave of himself to many organizations and a person like him will be sorely missed by so, so many.

My condolences to the Jones family. I had Mr Jones as a teacher at BHS. One of my fondest memories of high school was his typing class- where we learned to type on a typewriter!! My classes in the business department at BHS were a major factor that led to my career as a CPA. I particularly recall his sense of humor. Sending best wishes to the family in honor of a great man.
