Peter Liddy Obituary

Peter Scott Liddy, 73

Holden - Peter Scott Liddy of Holden and York Beach, Maine passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family after 56 months of braving a relentless battle against pancreatic cancer.

During his 73 years Peter had a life full of blessings fueled by hard work and love. He was born in Worcester on May 14,1944 to Robert and Louise (Seibold) Liddy. In 1968 he married his wife of 49 years, Martha Bergin. They had four children; Paul and his girlfriend, Laurie Litwiller of Princeton, Robert and his wife, Laura Mae of Sutton and Peter II and his wife, Meghan of Holden and Kathryn of York Beach, Maine. Known as Big Pete to his grandchildren, Haley, Patrick, Brendan, Thomas, Taighe, Cameron and Aidan, he took great pride in watching the next generation of Liddys. He also leaves his sisters, Karen Detch and Jean Orawsky; their families and a large extended family.

Pete was a graduate of South High School, Worcester Industrial Technical Institute and Worcester Polytechnic Institute's School of Industrial Management. He began his career at Smith Valve Corporation before moving to PresMet Corporation and later Pirani Electric. In 1984 he co founded LidCo Electrical Contractors in Holden where he worked for 34 years without ever wanting to retire.

Throughout the years Pete was an active member of his community. A long time member of St. Mary's Church, he served as president of the Parish Council for 11 years and was a member of the Men's Club. He was a member of the Worcester Young Businessmen's Association and president of the Holden Exchange Club. Pete used his expertise as an electrician to contribute to the Holden Municipal Light Department's Advisory Board which he participated in for over twenty years, including his tenure as the board's chairman. For more than four years he proudly served as a member of the Holden Public Safety Building Committee. He was also a director of the National Electrical Contractors Association, Worcester Chapter. In 2012 he was honored to receive Holden's Good Neighbor Award in recognition for the contributions he made to his community.

When Pete wasn't working at LidCo, he could be found taking meticulous care of the lawn (and fighting a 40-year war against the leaves in his yard), fixing or improving any number of things around the house, or helping others with projects at their own homes. Beyond his love for family and friends and the satisfaction he took from a hard day of work, Pete's other greatest passion was his long-standing love of fast cars. His 1965 Pontiac GTO was a source of great pride and to his delight, garnered awards at many car shows. He had a lifelong love of NASCAR and on the weekends, could often be found watching the races. Trips to NASCAR races in recent years were a beacon of joy through his journey with cancer. Nothing made Pete happier than having a house full of family or relaxing at their home in York Beach, Maine

The Liddy family would like to extend their immeasurable gratitude to the staff at Dana Farber Cancer Institute, (Milford) including Dr. Natalie Sinclair, as well as his primary care physician Dr. Deborah Hazen. Their expertise and compassion guided Team Peter through his long fight against cancer, during which he beat so many odds.

Family and friends are invited to visit with Peter's family from 4 to 8 pm on Thursday, February 1st at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden and again at 9:30 am on Friday, February 2nd, before leaving in procession to St. Mary's Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168 Boston, MA 02284 (www.dana-farber.org/gift), St. John's Food for the Poor Program, 44 Temple Street Worcester, MA 01604 (www.stjohnsfoodforthepoor.org) or St. Mary's Parish PO Box 2200 Jefferson MA, 01522. Liddy family, I am so sorry, I just found out. I am sorry I missed the wake and funeral. I would have liked to meet your father's legacy. He was one of the most honorable people I've ever met. He was a rare person who upon meeting for the first time that you could instantly tell lived a humble and credible life.

In a world being dominated by winners who blatantly cheat and lie, leaders who obscenely take advantage of the powerless and a public who demands to be entertained instead of truthfully informed, a credible life is an incredible accomplishment.

I believe it was Abraham Lincoln that said something to this affect, In the end it's not the years in your life that counts, but the life in your years. I have no doubt your father made the most of his.

Miss him, mourn him, remember him But most of all be like him

What a perfect exanmple of pyayers being answered!
To have had Peter in your lives for so much longer than anyone ever expected is a result of many people praying and the expertise of his nurses and doctors!

As we were leaving York last August, we said our goodnyes til next year and he left me with "Don't stop praying"...wise man.

May God bless all of you and may his spirit live on in your hearts.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
