Dear Betsy, Karen, Melissa, and families,

We're so sorry to hear about Ray's passing. He was such a nice uncle and brother-in-law to our family, and we know he was a great husband to Dorothy and father and grandfather to all of you.

Although we lived far away from each other, we did visit from time-to-time, and he was always a pleasure to be with.

Much love from,

Betty (Gates) Clegg, Barb (Clegg) Cheney, and family

It's been hard for me to be so far away from Dad. Especially in the last few months, when our phone conversations, when we had them, led to confusion on both sides. So I've been praying. A lot. I pray on my walks, I pray as I fell asleep, I pray as I wake, praying for his comfort and peace. And one day when I was praying, it suddenly hit me like a flash: Dad loved me. Dad really really loved me. He loved all of us, loved his daughters Karen and Melissa, deeply loved Mom. He loved all of us equally, which means he loved each of us wholly, with his total self. There was no part of him that didn't love. He was dedicated, devoted, and persistent in his love. Dad was such a reserved person that I never really understood this. His German upbringing taught him to be strong, be tough, keep his emotions private. But he loved an unconditional enduring love. I can't believe it took me this long to really appreciate that. It was on that love that I built my life, knowing that I always had his support. I stood on the back of that love and stretched tall. And I took it for granted. Dad taught me to be a parent, how to love my own children unconditionally, even if I may not agree with them. How to let them stand up and grow, taking my support for granted. I never knew how it would feel to lose a dad. Now there's a huge dad-shaped hole in my life. I will miss him always. The missing may get less over time but it will never go away. I'll look at pictures and letters and remember his voice, his laugh, his thoughts. Just before Mom died, she said to Dad: You won't forget me, will you? And he never ever did. Mom, Dad, I will never forget you. You live in my heart always.

We knew our dad to exemplify love for his family, in every setting and every situation, from the first day we understood what love was until the day he died. If there was something he could teach us girls, he did it. He taught us all how to change a tire, even though we didn't think we needed to know how. He gave love through perseverance. He gave it without anger. He exemplified the epitome of patience. It's hard to hold your own when your house is filled with 4 dramatic girls. He was steadfastly patient with all of us. He never failed us.

Deepest sympathy to all Ray's family. Ray will be missed in so many ways. I will always remember his kindness, unique sense of humor and his love of a good meal. I will remember cooking for him and seeing him enjoy nature right outside his door. We enjoyed the Orlando Ballet together and had so many conversations about science and what was going on in the world as well as other universes! He was always learning and willing to share his vast knowledge on so many subjects. Rest in peace (Buddy) because I know you are in a good place. I hope you check in on me once in a while but I know I will see you on the other side! Love to you always.
