Richard Kennedy Obituary

Richard B. Kennedy, 77

WORCESTER - Richard B. Kennedy, 77, of Worcester, died Friday, May 14, 2021 at UMass Memorial Medical Center after a brief illness.

Dick leaves his wife of 52 years, Mary Ann (Manning) Kennedy; a son Richard B. Kennedy II of New York, New York; a daughter Elizabeth DeHoratius and her husband Edmund of Worcester; three grandsons, William, Matthew and Andrew DeHoratius; a sister, Kathleen A. Kennedy of Mystic, Connecticut; three brothers, Francis E. Kennedy and his wife Pattrawadi of Hanover, New Hampshire, Paul S. Kennedy of Worcester, and Robert M. Kennedy and his wife Mary of Rochdale; and many nieces and nephews. His sister-in-law Joan M. Kennedy passed away last year.

Dick was born in Worcester, son of Francis E. and Margaret M. (Toomey) Kennedy. He grew up in Rochdale and, after graduating from WPI in 1965, started his career at IBM. After a brief stint in Poughkeepsie, Dick and Mary Ann moved back to Worcester in 1976. He worked at Norton Company and Saint-Gobain, retiring as Vice President of the Abrasives Marketing Group in 1999. He subsequently consulted for Frank Lynn & Associates of Chicago until 2004. He then became President and Chief Executive Officer of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, a position he held until 2013. Never content to be fully retired, in recent years Dick consulted for the Worcester Business Development Corporation, the Benefits Development Group and Sunshine Sign. He served on the board of the L.S. Starrett Company for over 25 years.

Dick was a champion of Worcester, devoting his professional and personal energy to any effort that strengthened the city. His love of Worcester was surpassed only by his love of friends and family. He connected easily with people, who without fail remember him as kind, funny, caring, upbeat and genuinely interested in their lives. He was as devoted a husband, father and Papa as you could find, delighting in his children's and grandchildren's accomplishments, big and small. We will miss him forever and strive each day to emulate his kindness, enthusiasm, good humor and zest for life.

We would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Saint Vincent Hospital and UMass Memorial Medical Center 7th floor and 2 Lakeside ICU for their kindness and compassion over the past few weeks. We extend heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Savant Mehta and his team for their superior care and tireless advocacy.

There will be calling hours Wednesday, May 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral Mass will be Thursday, May 20, at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 353 Grove St., Worcester. Burial will be at Rural Cemetery, Worcester.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Dick's memory to the Worcester Regional Strategic Opportunity Foundation (c/o Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, 311 Main Street, Suite 200, Worcester, MA 01608 or https://www.worcesterchamber.org/chamber-mission-strategy/) or the United Way of Central Massachusetts (484 Main Street, Suite 300, Worcester, MA 01608 or https://unitedwaycm.org/).

Will always remember RBK from the IBM days. When you saw him coming towards your desk and his hand like in a holster position ready for the firm handshake to start the day. The wall to wall grin was also a trademark of RBK and he was motivation to start the day.. there was only one RBK full of stories to 6tstart the day.

Dick was my boss, my friend and my mentor over the many years we worked together at Norton. After we both "retired" I loved occasions when we would see each other at the Boynton or O´CONNORS. Have a beer, reminiscing and as always...that laugh. RIP Dick.

I want the Kennedy Family to know, We at Norton Company really liked Dick so much! He was always "Upbeat" and really thought of us as friends more then just Co-Workers. He made every day a lot more interesting and pleasant to be there, it really was a family! We will miss him, he was a great man.

I spent some years living next door to "Mr.Kennedy". I was just another kid, in a neighborhood of lots of kids. That didn´t stop "Liz´s dad" from being genuinely interested, patient, kind, encouraging and thoughtful with "all" of us. He had a way of making folks feel special in his presence. A true gentleman, and someone a "kid" could look up to. The world has been made a better place because of his energies. May God continue to bless the Kennedy family in their time of loss.

To Richard-II and family: I knew your Dad as a kind and honorable person. A great help to his community and family --what more could anyone want from a fellow human than that they left this world better than they found it.

To my WPI classmate, Paul Kennedy, and the rest of the Kennedy family, my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Dick Kennedy. Dick was my big brother at Phi Kappa Theta fraternity. I greatly appreciated his friendship and guidance over those years when we were both at WPI. I trust that the esteem to which he is held by those who have known him will bring some measure of comfort to his family at the time of terrible sadness.

Kennedy and I first met when we were both promoted to the IBM Customer Executive Program at Poughkeepsie, NY. We became close friends and continued our friendship long after we both had left IBM for other careers.

We had fun in any and all of our endeavors! Always committed, focused and competent, we succeeded in educating IBM's top customer executives in the knowledge and management of IBM computer systems and technology.

He was the best, with his awesome magnetic personality, his ability to connect with people with ease his superb grace humor and intelligence.

We traveled to London to teach two classes to UK executives and had the most humorous of times. I could take hours narrating our adventures together in London.

I will miss him dearly, his smile, his wit and his laughter.
He was a very special human being, that's why I loved him.

May God welcome you into His arms, Kennedy, the same way our IBM executives did and the same way I did!

Mary Ann and family we are very sorry for the loss of your loving husband, father and devoted grandfather. Growing up with Richard as a true friend and classmate at Leicester High meant so much to me as I think of the past. We were together in classes, on sport teams and many hours in high school activities. He was our leader in all aspects. We had many memories of football games at the Kennedy field with the rock in the middle. Richard was always the one that kept us in line. Mary Ann,remember the happy occasions that you two spent with family and friends. God bless, George and Lillian Albro
