George Butler Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Athy Memorial Home - Worcester on Mar. 27, 2026.
George Stark Butler, 90, passed away at Knollwood Nursing Center on March 20, 2026.

George was born in Worcester, June 5th 1935, the son of Gordon S. and Barbara (Stark) Butler. He graduated from the Fay School in Southborough, MA as well as Worcester Academy and Nichols College. After completing military service in the United States Army where his rank was Sgt. First Class, he joined the family business, Butler-Dearden Paper Inc. as a salesman. He was the third generation to be involved with the firm and he eventually became President and Chairman of the Board.

In years past George was actively involved with the First Baptist Church where he served on many committees and especially enjoyed the Men's Bowling league. George served as a board member on several community organizations including the Better Business Bureau, Worcester Fresh Air Fund (Camp Putman), the Worcester Animal Rescue League and the Youth Committee of the Greendale YMCA. He was also a member of the Worcester County Craftsmen's Club and the National Paper Trade Association. An outgoing person, George enjoyed the camaraderie of his friends in the Worcester Rotary Club and the Bohemians.

In the summertime, at Sagamore Beach, meeting his buddies for early morning coffee was a highlight of the weekend. He also made many friends during his early morning swims at the YMCA. George was a supportive member of Preservation Worcester and a former member of Tatnuck Country Club and the Worcester Club. All his friends and family will miss his warm smile and welcoming personality.

He and his wife traveled to many parts of the world, but George felt the best place to be was sitting on the front porch at the family's summer home in Sagamore Beach overlooking Cape Cod Bay. He particularly delighted in teaching his children how to fish.

George was the beloved husband of Alta-Mae "Tammy" (Ide) Butler with whom he shared 64 years of marriage. He is also survived by his two children of whom he was very proud, David S. (Lynn) Butler and Deborah (John) Buscema. He also leaves four grandchildren who brought him much joy, Samuel (Danielle) Butler, Mackenzie Butler and Pamela and Brandon Buscema. He was predeceased by his sister, Joyce Butler McAdams.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 16th at 11 a.m. in the Birches building at the Briarwood Continuing Care Community, 65 Briarwood Circle, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, gifts made be made in memory of George to the First Baptist Church, 111 Park Avenue, Worcester, MA 01609.
