Robert Conroy Obituary

Robert L. Conroy, 86, of Worcester, passed into eternal life on Monday, May 16th, 2011 after a singularly courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease. A lifelong resident of Worcester, he was the beloved husband of Joan (Sullivan) Conroy of Worcester for 57 years. He was the dear father of Christine Muth (Richard) of Alexandria, VA, Robert L. Conroy, Jr., of Worcester, Joan Habib (Mehrdad) of Norfolk, MA, Nancy Conroy of Worcester, and Neil Conroy (Denise) of Medfield, MA. Loving grandfather of Emily and Laura Muth, Kian, Cameron, and Sarina Habib, and Sean, Matthew, and Zachary Conroy.

He was born in Worcester, MA, the son of the late Veronica McGuinness of Worcester and brother of the late Rita Spencer, formerly of Charlotte, NC. He was a member of America's "greatest generation" and served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy as an air traffic controller at Hickam Air Field, Hawaii, during World War II. He served the City of Worcester for over 40 years, having worked with the Worcester Parks Department, Fire Department, and the Worcester Police Department, retiring as Deputy Chief in 1990. While with the Police Department, he was instrumental in setting up the Model Cities and Crime Prevention Programs. In retirement, he was an instructor in criminal justice at Quinsigamond Community College and enjoyed playing tennis and golf. He was a graduate of Clark University with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Criminal Justice in 1978 and 1982, respectively. Bob was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and a man of high integrity and moral character. He believed strongly in higher education, perseverance and always making the most of one's opportunities. He enjoyed a healthy lifestyle and was running and exercising late into his retirement years. He was a fan of all the New England Sports teams and most of all, the New England Patriots. His family was of paramount importance to him; he loved and found contentment at all family gatherings and events. He enjoyed music, taking the "long walk," and the "short walk."

In later years, he could often be seen in the company of his devoted son, Robert Jr, running errands, visiting the cottage in Maine, hitting a bucket of balls at the driving range, or eating in his favorite restaurant along with his dear wife and loving daughter, Nancy. Words are inadequate to convey how much he will be missed, but he will be remembered always for the life lessons he taught whether to his family or those who were lucky enough to know him in his law enforcement and teaching years. He was a member of the Massachusetts Police Association, the Worcester County Retired Police and Firefighters Association, and the Clark University Alumni.

The family would like to thank Dr. Mark Schrank and Dr. Gary Kielson for their excellent care and support over the years. As well, we would like to thank Anne Durand and Phil Wood of Affinity Hospice for making him as comfortable as possible.

The funeral is Saturday, May 21st from O'CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, with a Mass at 10:00 A.M. in Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant Street. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday, May 20th in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.

Hi Dad,

We were out to dinner the other night and were talking about you and Mom. Thanks as always for all the sacrifices you made for us along with the support. Bob and I are threatening to get the golf clubs out and hit Hillcrest. We will be thinking of you and how you were always the putting champion. On another note, Zach graduates from Providence College in a few days...crazy. As you taught us...we put a high priority on a college education and are happy all 3 boys have successfully made it through.
You're always in our thoughts and prayers.

Dad, I'll always remember you coming to my house all spiffed up and tap dancing in my kitchen. I was always honored when you asked me for a dance. When I was little I loved hearing you sing in the parlor to Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee and many others. You had a great voice and the good looks to be a movie star!
I love and miss you always! Love, Joan

Dear Dad, I think of you often especially when I hear big band music and Frank Sinatra's , My Way. You had a great voice and a wonderful sense of style. In my mind's eye I see you tap dancing in my kitchen:) Love and miss you always, Joanie

June 13, 2012

My darling Bob - my beloved husband,

I have loved you from the minute I saw you at that dance. When you asked me to to dance I was so happy. We had many years together but never enough.

You were always gentle and encouraging of me and the children. You gave me a wonderful life but too short. I miss our family gatherings with you.

You worked very hard for all of us. All we accomplished we owe to you. I will miss and love you for the rest of my life. Remember the harmonizing and singing rounds on our car trips. You had a beautiful voice but then everything was wonderful with you. I was so fortunate.

Loves, hugs and kisses,

Wife Joan

Hi Dad,

It is me Bob. It has been one year since you left us! Not a day goes by that I don't think about you! There is a giant hole in my life! I love you and as I told you many times I will always love you forever and ever and ever.

As the good weather comes to New England again I remember all the times that you and I played golf and tennis together. I could always, always depend on you and you never said "no" when I asked you to play with me. We had so much fun! How I wish you were here now and we were on the golf course again!

No one can or ever will know what you and I went through together! I know I failed you at the end! I was never as strong as you! You were the strongest, bravest man I ever knew. Please, please forgive me!

Dad, sleep warm!

All my love now and forever more!

Dear Neil and family,
I am just now learning about the loss of your Dad. Although I didn't know him for a long time, the time I did spend with him and your Mom was very special. I fondly recall how hospitable and sincere he was.
I very recently lost my Mom and someone sent these words to me......Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in Heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know that are happy. I truly believe they are happy and at peace. These wonderful people we call "parents" have given so much throughout their lives for us their "children". So, look up into the night sky and see your Dad shining down upon you!
Please accept my condolences for your loss.
With Love and God's Blessing,
Pamela Polo-Moscatelli

Grandpa,
It is impossible to try to list the countless amazing memories of times I have spent with you. Every major milestone, holiday or event I knew I could count on you to attend. Whether you were singing and dancing or telling jokes, (do a lot of bowling?) you always brought a smile to everyone's face. I can remember your unconditional encouragement and support through every stage of my education and employment.
I have so many happy memories of visiting you in Worcester. Upon arrival, you would always offer me a range of healthy snacks only to give in and dip into your Fudgsicle stash.
I remember your passion when discussing your police work and enjoyed listening to your stories about your time in the Navy. I especially enjoyed hearing about how you passed your swimming test!
I also remember you showing me a grueling exercise routine downstairs in your basement gym several years ago. I stared in disbelief as you effortlessly completed a routine that would challenge athletes at any age! When I was 16, you let me drive your car as a reward for getting my license. I made sure to drive as slow as possible and was very nervous. However, you told me to "go easy" over and over. I realized that you really cared about your car yet you cared far more about sharing the experience with me.I felt so proud that you allowed me to drive you even though I was so young.
I always enjoyed visiting you in Maine and hearing about your restaurant adventures- especially bad ones :)
At the driving range, I can remember you explaining every minute detail of swinging at a golf ball. No matter how badly I hit the ball you were always quick to point out the positives. Despite my golf balls flying into the trees, you would tell me "your power is there, just concentrate more." This is an aspect of your personality which I really admire. No matter what the circumstances, you were able to maintain a positive outlook and live your life to the fullest.
You could make anyone smile and put everyone at ease with your unending humor. Your dedication to your family as well as community will never be forgotten. Your spirit will always live on through your children, grandchildren and beyond. I am so thankful I was able to have you as a grandfather and was able to spend so many years with you. I would say goodbye but you haven't left my heart or the hearts of anyone who loved you. I love you Grandpa and will remember you always.

I did not know Mr. Conroy but I have been fortunate enough to have worked for and with his daughter, Chris Muth. Her accomplishments and her always-positive attitute towards life and her fellows demonstrate the presence of a good father. He will surely be missed. My condolences to his family and friends.

I was very sad to hear of the passing of your dad. He sounds like a wonderful, warm, fun man that raised an extraordinary family. I can see his imprint on you. You were always warm, calm and positive even in the most stressful circumstances. It was a pleasure working for you and learning from you. My MSC years in Singapore are among the brightest feathers in my hat. Thank you for believeing in me. I never knew your father but through you I benefitted from his teachings. My heartfelt condolences to you and your family for this great loss.

Neil and family, So sorry to hear of your dear Dad's passing. After reading his obituary, I realized what an extraordinary man that he was. His achievements and dedication to his family, country, and community surpassed that of most men...you must be very proud of what he was, and, Neil, the apple does not fall from the tree. He is now reaping all of the fruits of his labors from here on earth. May he rest in eternal peace...Jeanne Iodice.

I was very saddened of your passing Mr. Conroy. Although it has been difficult but courageous time for you in the past a few years, I always remember the good times. I remember our family gatherings, your smile, jokes, dances, and singing. I enjoyed our tennis matches and our little political dicussions. Every time I came to your house you woudn't let me leave without having one of your special flavoured teas or an ice cream bar or cookies. Every time you came to my house, after dinner, you always told me I should open a restaurant. A few weeks ago, on Easter, after shooting some basketball and amazingly making over 20 baskets in row, you grabbed my hand tight and asked me to take you for a walk. I didn't know it was our last walk together. Even though it was a short walk, I enjoyed it very match and felt close to you. We'll miss you always.

In recent years, I haven't made it up to Massachusetts to see family as often as I should have. I regret that now, and regret that I couldn't be present to stand with my family to salute one of the greatest men I could ever know, my grandpa. Reading everyone's memories in this book has brought home to me the reality of our loss, of someone who dedicated his life to service, for his country, his community, and above all, his family. Grandpa has given me a new definition of success, to live a life with as much love in my heart as he did.
We miss you.

Grandpa,

I'll never forget our family gatherings that you enjoyed so much. Sitting at the end of the dinner table always being the one to tap the glass with a piece a silverware before we sang happy birthday. You were always the life of the party singing, dancing, and telling jokes that made me laugh even when I didn't get them.

I enjoyed our times playing golf in recent years and will always think of you when I'm swinging the clubs.

You always supported and encouraged me to be the best I could be and I will truly miss you. Love you,

Camie

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Conroy family during this difficult time of losing a loved one. I really want to commend "Uncle Bob" for the love that he always showed to his father. After one particular basketball game that Mr.Conroy and Bob attended. I walked up to Neil after the game with a tear in my eye. I told Neil that I have never seen so much love and patience then what I experienced watching Bob with his father. He made sure his dad was comfortable in his hard chair throughout the game. What really touched me was, that Bob's arm was around his dad's shoulders the entire game. If we could all love like Uncle Bob , what a better world it would be......... Love Dawn Strehlke

Hi Dad,

I was looking at the last email I could find from you and it is about 9 years ago. I have saved all of the emails from you and I'm glad I did. Reading them gives me comfort as it reminds me of when you were healthy, even though I know 9 years ago you were starting to feel the effects of Alzheimer's. I also have a lot of video tape that I plan to show people to remind them of how funny you were and how much you loved being a part of family gatherings.

I want to once again thank you for everything you have done for us all. You came from nothing and built yourself up- with little guidance- into a courageous, honest, brave, hard-working, moral man of the highest integrity. I have been telling people if I am half the man you are, then I would be doing fine.

You stressed to us the value of hard work, not feeling sorry for yourself, never quitting and of course living a healthy lifestyle and valuing family above all else. You put some of us through private high school and all of us through college. We all have advanced degrees because of you. You know how I feel about you sending me to St. John's - it turned my life around and lead me on a path that otherwise I would not have known.

You showed us how to be a loving, loyal and devoted son, husband, father and grandfather.

You showed us bravery under the most dire circumstances, your suffering through Alzheimer's.

We know that you are at peace now and will look down upon us, helping us to find our way. Some day we will all be reunited once again.

Please help all of us through this difficult time, but especially Bob, Mom and Nancy. They were so devoted in their care for you over these past 10 years. Bob was nothing short of heroic and his devotion to you was truly amazing. We will do our best to support each other as you would expect.

I love you Dad very much and always will. As Bob said, you are our hero. I will try to take the great examples you set for us and apply them to raising Sean, Matt and Zach into fine, young men. I will take the example you set of loving Mom and use that in my own marriage to Denise.

Job well done Dad, well done.

Rest in Peace.

Love,
Neil, Denise, Sean, Matt and Zach
P.S. I have to admit that it was me who lit the huge fire in the woods at Taunton Street. It was also me on the un-registered dirt bike that day that went flying by you. By the look on your face, it seemed very wise for me to flip the visor down and go by you. What were you doing home at that hour of the day!?

Dearest Dad,

My heart is full of sadness as I write these words to you. I remember your beautiful smile, and the way your face would light up whenever we were together at family gatherings. Your words of support and encouragement will echo in my mind and heart for the rest of my life.

The courage you demonstrated when faced with your devastating diagnosis never waivered. To the very end your positive attitude always shone through. Asked many times how you were doing you always replied, "Good, pretty good" and never once complained.

I remember the good times; "tickle rubs" for the kids, the granola bars (you always advocated a healthy lifestyle even before it was in vogue), and the fudgicles in the summer. I see you standing in the doorway of your house waving goodbye to me as I left after a visit. Anytime music was played your fingers would start snapping and those toes of yours were tapping. Thanks to you, I know all the words to songs like, "Amapola" and "Green Eyes", and I thoroughly enjoyed our concerts at Briarwood, especially those with Jack Craig.

I'll always be thinking of you and your unwavering support throughout my life. I share your love of music and all the old songs ("Fly Me to the Moon" and "My Way",among others). You certainly lived your life "your way" and none of us would have wanted it any other way.

Save a dance for me in heaven, Dad, and please watch over all of us. But especially keep a special eye on your best friend and son, Bob. He loves and misses you so!

All my love now and forever!

Your loving daughter, Joan

Hi Grandpa,

My mom has told me so many great stories about you while she was growing up. She told me what a brave and hardworking man you have always been. Nothing was handed to you, and you made the most of your life, achieving the greatest accomplishments. I really admire you and look up to you for that. My mom always tells me how you were the best dad in the world.

I will remember you as the best grandfather. I remember you singing "A you're Adorable, B you're so Beautiful.." to me. I also remember how every time I saw you you would ask me to teach you how to tap dance. I remember you bringing me downstairs in the basement of your house and showing my brothers and I how to punch the punching bag. One of the greatest memories I have is your sense of humor. You never lost your sense of humor even in the toughest times.

I love you Grandpa and I will miss you.

Love,
Sari

To Our Wonderful Neighbors, The Conroys:

It is with a heavy heart we write these words. Kind, expressive, intelligent, generous, delightful, and inspiring are how we describe Robert, even those words do not seem quite enough. It is sometimes said that a man is judged by those he has left behind, the Conroy family are some of the finest people we know. Robert will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.

I could never leave the Conroy house without Mr. Conroy asking me "how about an apple?...or how about a banana?... Kudos bar?". We still say this same expression at our house with fond thoughts of Mr. Conroy. He was such a thoughtful, and caring man and hIs face lit up when he was talking about his kids.

I'll always remember the great "parlor chats" and the incredible summers in Maine with the Conroy family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Conroy and his family. Lots of love from the Morans.

Please accept my sincerest condolences to you and the entire family....Marline Ogunjobi, Worcester, MA,

Dad, I love you and will always love you forever and ever with all of my heart! Through your loving sacrifice I was clothed, fed, sheltered and educated. You provided a sterling example of love and commitment to family! You were my best friend and we shared so many good times and special moments. I especially remember the fun we had playing golf and tennis and all the nice walks, family dinners and family celebrations we shared. You are and will always be my hero! You are the bravest person I have ever, ever known!

Sleep warm, Dad!

Rest in peace, Dad!

Your loving son,

Bob

To my loving dad, who was always my protector, my solace, my bulwark. I will especially miss your beautiful baritone voice when you sang broadway tunes to me such as Oklahoma. A special thanks to my brother Bob who selflessly took great care of my father. I'll miss you terribly Dad and you will always be in my heart. I love you.

We are sorry to hear of Uncle Bobby's passing. He was always kind to us Spencer kids. Rita spoke of him at the end of her life and was kind in her remembrance. You are all in our thoughts......Steve Spencer, Charlotte NC

The Conroy Family,

I was very sorry to learn of Bob's passing. I remember having many great conversations in his office during our years together on the Worcester Police Department. Bob was truly one of the nicest gentelmen I have ever met. You and he will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I never met Robert, but have known Neil for many years at Analog Devices, and had the pleasure of enjoying a great day at the cottage in Maine for a team-building exercise. It was interesting to read that Robert served the Navy in Hawaii during WW II, as I had an uncle that was stationed there as well...I wonder if they knew each other? In any event, please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss. All the best to the entire Conroy family during this difficult time.

We are very sorry to learn of the passing of Mr. Conroy. He was a very kind man and certainly raised a wonderful, tight knit family. Neil often tells stories of growing up in Worcester. The stories did not begin with, “My friends and I….” but rather it was of time spent with family. Neil’s recollection of such events set the stage for an animated/entertaining description of the adventure, from start to finish. The stories and memories last a lifetime and will always put a smile on our faces.
It was always a pleasure to see Mr. Conroy and brother Bob on the sidlelines cheering on Sean, Matt, Zach and even my own children. Bob’s devotion to his father was very evident and is just another example of the type of family Mr. and Mrs. Conroy raised.
Thinking of you,
Bill and Maura Fitzgerald
