Robert Grundstrom Obituary

Robert F. Grundstrom

Worcester - Robert F. Grundstrom, 93, died on Sunday, January 31, 2021 after a period of declining health. A quiet man, Bob looked forward to his morning "Coffee and…" (donut and conversation with his buddies) at The Donut Express on Webster Street in Worcester before heading to Life Care of Auburn where he would have lunch with his wife every day. He also enjoyed reading the morning newspaper, and playing cribbage with anyone who would play with him. The Boston Red Sox games were his favorite to watch on television (although he confessed to being a Yankees fan too) along with Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. In his younger days he enjoyed candlepin bowling and going to Hampton Beach.

He was born in Worcester, MA the son of Godfrey O and Esther E (Beauregard) Grundstrom. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife of 42 years who died on September 10, 2020, Grace M (Williams, Linkevich, Laskowski) Grundstrom; siblings Godfrey L and Edward R Grundstrom, Esther E Viscera, and Helen L Nobiletti.

He is survived by his brother Philip W Johnson of Millbury, son Robert M Grundstrom and his wife Michelle of Sutton, step children Gail E (Linkevich) Kustigian and her husband Harry of Leicester; Richard F Linkevich and his wife Diane of Palm Harbor FL; and Alfred J Laskowski and his wife Stephanie of Sturbridge. In addition, he has 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren who affectionately called him "Bubba" along with several nieces and nephews.

Robert was a proud WW II Veteran, and a Life Member of the Dudley Gendron Post 414 in Sutton MA where he often served in the Honor Guard for Veteran's activities. He also was a member of the Masons, Athelstan Lodge in Worcester.

He received his GED from Boy's Trade High School after the war and was so proud of this accomplishment. He was employed by National Bottling Company and Allied Manufacturing where he was a member of the Boiler Makers Union.

There will be a calling hour on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 from 9:30-10:30 prior to a funeral service at Henry Dirsa Funeral Home, 33 Ward Street, Worcester, following current occupancy limitations and mask requirements. Burial will be in Central Cemetery in Millbury.

In lieu of flowers it was Bob's wish that memorial donations be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 ST Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105 or a charity of your choice.

Uncle Bob Grundstrom, was a great guy of whom, like my Dad, Edward Grundstrom (his brother) I will always be proud of...
A modest, WW2 Hero, from the greatest generation, he always made us so proud when he marched in parades, in my hometown of Sutton, MA.
Uncle Bob always had a great sense of humor, and you just wanted to be around him. He had a quiet, strong, mentoring
presence, much like my Father. In a sense, he was like a 2nd Father to me.
I´m so glad he and his wife Grace, got to meet the love of my life Sue.
His son, Robbie has that same kindness, always smiling and kind...
A real great guy, with movie star looks, he was a real inspiration, with his straightforward communication, and his constant expression he projected of always being there for anyone.
I will miss you Uncle Bob, I love you with all my heart and soul as scores of other people do, as well.
Your Proud Nephew,
John, and my beautiful Wife Susan Grundstrom

I am sorry for loss. Bob often stopped in to the Worcester Senior Center, first to drop off and pick up Grace and then every now and then to chat. He was very sweet. I will miss both of them.

Uncle Bob, you will be sorely missed, as Sue and I thought of you as a second father. My father and mother, were always so proud of you, as you marched in the Memorial Day Parade, and participated in the volley which honored our Veterans, as were we, as kids, looked on to watch you. You, my Dad, Eddy, and the oldest brother Godfrey Jr; all served our Country proudly, in the Second World War. We love you, Uncle Bob, as we loved Aunt Grace, who you have now rejoined in heaven. Thanks for all the great memories, and thanks for being you ! I can´t even process, the void I will feel in my life with you not here now, with that kind, sometimes mischievous smile of yours, but I know we´ll meet in heaven, as that is where you deserve to be, with Aunt Grace, and the rest of our loved ones... Take care, my buddy.
Love, John and Sue Grundstrom
