Roger E. Wheeler, 92

Berlin - Roger E. Wheeler, 92, passed away on April 6, 2018 at UMass Memorial- Worcester, after a period of declining health. His wife, Helen (Bradley) Wheeler died in 1999. He leaves behind his twin sons, Peter and Paul Wheeler both of Berlin; six grandchildren, Heidi Levenson; Michael Wheeler and his wife Casey; Sara Domenici; Amanda, Alicia, and Olivia Wheeler; a great-granddaughter Jenna; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; his caretakers, Kathy Clark, Lisa Dion, and Edie Brewer. Roger was predeceased by his daughter, Nancy Domenici, his sister, Norma Andrews, and his brother, Fred Wheeler. A lifelong resident of Berlin, he was the son of Roland and Freda (Stone) Wheeler. He was a graduate of Worcester Boys Trade School, class of 1944. Mr. Wheeler established Roger E. Wheeler and Sons Excavating in 1955 and worked well into his 80s. He was a member of the Berlin Fire Department from 1947 until his death, serving as Fire Chief from 1964 until 1990. Roger also served on the Berlin Police Department from 1949-1970 and was a two-term selectman in town. Mr. Wheeler, a combat veteran, proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations during WW II. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Chevalier de la Legion d 'Honneur, from France.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 13, 2018 from 4-8 p.m. in Hays Funeral Home, 56 Main St. Northborough. His funeral will be held on Saturday, April 14th at 11:00 a.m. in First Parish Church of Berlin, 24 Central St. Burial with military honors will follow in South Cemetery. The family requests that flowers be omitted.
