Roscoe Blunt Obituary

Roscoe C. "Rockie" Blunt, Jr. 85, of Kings Point, Shrewsbury, award winning police reporter and renowned author, died Thursday, February 10, 2011 in UMass Memorial Medical Center after an illness.

Mr. Blunt, a native of Worcester, had lived in Shrewsbury since 1948.

He was a World War II Army veteran and a survivor of the Belgian Ardennes Forest "Battle of the Bulge" Campaign and was awarded three battle stars, a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. During the war, Mr. Blunt was a mine and booby trap technician with the 84th "Railsplitter" Infantry Division in France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. Before his overseas duty, Mr. Blunt was the youngest GI in the country to be awarded the Expert Infantry Badge.

Mr. Blunt was an investigative police and fire reporter for most of his 32 years with the former Worcester Evening Gazette. At the time of his retirement in 1989, he was considered by Massachusetts State Police and other police agencies to be the dean of police reporters in Massachusetts. During his career, he covered police news throughout Central Massachusetts.

During his long career covering law enforcement and fire news, Mr. Blunt received 35 awards for his work, including three keys to the City of Worcester, and in 1984, was named "Man of the Year" by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles Police Association.

He started with the newspaper as a boy in the late' 30s as an Ace Carrier for the Evening Gazette, covering six and a half miles, taking three hours to complete each day on foot and earning $3 a week.

Mr. Blunt was the author of four books, "The Blunts: A History," tracing his family to medieval England and 12 generations in New England; "Inside the Battle of the Bulge, A private Comes of Age," "Foot Soldier: A Combat Infantryman's War in Europe," and "Police Beat," relating his law enforcement-related career. He was a well known television and radio personality in the Northeast.

He graduated from the former South High School in Worcester, attended Clark University before his military service and graduated in 1949 with honors from the New England Conservatory in Boston. Mr. Blunt was a well known jazz drummer throughout Massachusetts, starting as a boy with the former Saxtrum Club in Worcester and continued until the time of his death. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, Mr. Blunt led his own band, the "Rockie Blunt All Stars," believed to be the first integrated band in Central Massachusetts.

He was a former president of the Shrewsbury National Little League and at the time of his death was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Mr. Blunt, a world traveler, was an underwater cinematographer, diving on ship wrecks in Lake Huron, and photographing coral formations in the Caribbean and off South America and the Manatee migration in Florida. Later, after making more than 400 dives in Lake Quinsigamond, he lectured locally as a historian on the lake.

In 1973, Mr. Blunt and his son, Richard, installed a domed underwater habitat in Lake Quinsigamond, the first in Worcester County.

Mr. Blunt, a well-known historian of World War II, lectured on police-media relations at Clark University, Anna Maria College, Wachusett Community College, Quinsigamond Community College, and on World War II at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the Military Academy at West Point.

He was the son of Roscoe and Edith (Enberg) Blunt of Worcester. He is survived by three sons: Rockie Blunt of West Boylston, MA, Randie A. Blunt of Greenwood, AR, Richard D. Blunt of Annandale, VA; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral service is private and there will be no calling hours. Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home of Shrewsbury is directing arrangements. Burial, at the convenience of the family, will be in High Plains Cemetery Oakdale.

Dead Rickie, Rockie and Randy,
My sympathy on the death of your dad. He was a great guy and an excellent reporter who put everything he had into his work. I still remember his calling me after covering an early-morning fire with Fred Kardon after getting up in the middle of the night. "Save me some space on Page One. Fred and I have a good one." They were an editor's dream.I remember the time he, Bea and my wife spent at Annapolis, especially at Rick's graduation. And, of course, the Christmas Eve fire, which, though it immediately shattered them, they quickly recovered and rebuilt it into something better. He arguably was the best reporter The Gazette ever had and we missed him greatly after he retired.
Once again, my condolences.

Dear Rickie, Rockie and Randi,
My sympathy on your dad's death. He and Bea were among our good friends (my wife died three years ago)
For some inexplicable reason, we drifted apart after his retirement. He was a great reporter, probably the most dedicated I have ever known. I still remember when he would call me up after covering an early-morning fire and say, "Dick, save space on Page One for Fred Kardon and me." The two, of course, responded to those fires and had everything wrapped up long before deadline. No editor could ask for more. There's a certain sense of timeliness in that both of them died within weeks of each other. And, I still fondly remember your lovely mother and the good times we shared at Annapolis. Then, of course, their dedication to rebuilding your home after the fire---and making it better.
Once again, I my condolences.

Mr. Blunt was a real American Hero. I really enjoyed his book about the Battle of the Bulge and greatly admire the courage this man had at such an early age. I always wanted to write him a letter thanking him for the book but never did so and I really regret it. In his bravery and sacrifice for this country, truly a shining example of the greatest generation.

My deepest sympathies in your loss. Rocky always brightened everyone's day when he came in to see us at SELCO in the town hall. I loved hearing his stories and I thought his book "Foot Soldier" was one of the best books I have ever read. He was truly one of the "Greatest Generation". He will be missed.

Rockie, Randie and Richard, my sincerest and deepest sympathy in the loss of your dad. Now in my Sr. years, I am attending WISE --Assumption College. Your dad was a guest speaker once and oh the stories he told. After his talk, I mentioned to him I was a student of his son Rockie at Clark/Copace in 1986, and he was an excellent teacher, also that my brother Gerry Houle was his sons' teacher at Calvin Coolidge. We had a nice chat. Your dad was someone I will always remember. My brother--Gerry does not have a computer and wishes to express his sympathy to you 3 boys through my message. God Bless and may dad rest in peace!

I am saddened at hearing of your Dad's passing. I last chatted with him at Shaker's restaurant. I have many great memories of diving with your dad. Hunting for bottles in lake Quinsig right out from your front door. Him assisting me in the Scuba training of the Worcester Police Department's first SWAT Team and setting up having me dive under ice to locate weapons stolen from the Westborough Police Chief! Hold the memories, they are many. Tony Butkus Naui 4179

Don Fancy

February 12, 2011

Don Fancy, Portsmouth NH. Playing piano in the All Stars was my very first gig, from about 1948 till I was drafted in1951. I learned more in that band than in any other band - ever. 20 years later, Rockie and I met again behind the bar at the Driftwood. He was one of the best drummers that I ever worked with, one of the best friends I ever had. God bless you Rockie, and thanks for all the things you taught me.
