Vasil Rucho Obituary

The servant of God, Vasil Rucho, fell asleep in the Lord on May 7, 2011 at the age of 83. He and his beloved wife Florence (George) Rucho would have celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary next month. He is mourned by his daughter, Melanie (Rucho) Mentis and her husband Fr. Peter Mentis of Toronto, ON, and his son, Christopher Rucho and his wife Julie (Dowey) Rucho of West Boylston, along with 5 grandchildren that he loved dearly, Nicholas and Alexandra Mentis and Matthew, Brian, and William Rucho. Likewise he leaves his brothers, John Rucho and his twin, Louis Rucho, and a large extended family of inlaws, nephews, nieces, and friends who will miss his warm laugh and eager help. He was predeceased by brothers, Barney Rucho, Thomas Rucho, Peter Rucho, and sisters, Celia Soter and Margaret Yanka.

Vasil was born in Worcester on August 5, 1928, the son of Andon and Banusha Rucho. He worked for the Table Talk Pie Co. for 33 years. He also worked in the Family business, Dian's Flower Shop and at U Mass Medical Center. Throughout his life he was a faithful steward of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church and gave of his time and effort humbly and tirelessly. His greatest joy was to serve others and offer his help in whatever way was needed. At family dinners or Church events, he could always be found at the kitchen sink so others could relax and enjoy the day. Vasil demonstrated his constant love and Faith through good deeds offered generously and selflessly.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, May 12 at 10 am at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 34 Gold Street, Shrewsbury, MA. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester from 4 to 8 pm on Wednesday, May 11 with a Trisagion Service at 5 pm, and from 9 - 10 am at the Church prior to the funeral. Contributions in his memory may be made to St. Nicholas Orthodox Church. May Vasil rest among the Saints, and may his memory be eternal!

I will never forget one of the most welcoming people I've ever met and the guy who taught me backgammon. He still has a lot to teach us about the way to embrace Life.

Let us remember the smiling, the laughing, the talking, the sharing, the caring, and the loving. Let us remember the good times and fun always.
I have this feeling there's one more star up in the sky tonight. And even though it's far away, its brightness and warmth still reach us here to make the night a little less dark.
Thank you Vasil for being you and for being such a wonderful husband to my sister Florence and for being such a great father to the children you both brought into this world. Rest in peace, and be with the Lord. I know you are still here with us, helping and watching out for us all. Tom and I still see you with that TV remote control in your hand letting us know what we will be watching next on TV.

Dear Chris, Julie and boys,
I was so shocked to hear your dad died Chris! I am so very sorry to hear this. I just saw your mom and dad at Walmart right before Easter. They looked great! Please know you guys are all in our thoughts and prayers. We just went through the same thing as you know, so we know how difficult this is. Stay strong and know many people, and of course your neighbors are there for you!
With love, Dave & Sue Coviello and family

Our deepest sympathies to the entire Rucho family. Vasil was the hardest working man we have ever met. He was always there for the kids growing up in the Saint Nicholas Church parish. His memory will live on in our hearts forever and he will be missed.

Vasil was the best, pure and simple. What an honor to have known him.

He focused on important things, starting with the idea of kindness to others. His eyes were always at play, and yet he never ran away from work -- he simply found ways to make it enjoyable for all around him. It always occurred to me that his closest family basked in the aura of his living spirit. The rest of us received more than our fair share. He lifted our moods and our hearts. I will always be grateful.

My deepest sympathies go out to Flo and their kids and grandkids and many others who grieve our collective loss most deeply.
