William Elander Obituary

William A. (Billy) Elander Jr., 73, passed away unexpectedly at home on Friday, September 21, 2007.

Billy was born on July 31, 1934, son of the late William and Edith (Grundstrom) Elander. He graduated from Worcester Academy and Harvard University. In 2001 Billy was one of ten football players to receive an award for participation on the undefeated team in 1950 at Gaskill Field at Worcester Academy. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

Billy was a lawyer having passed the Massachusetts bar in 1961. He owned a title company located in the courthouse for many years. Billy was an avid reader and was considered an expert on sports (especially the Dodgers), trains, trolleys, diners and all of the wars. One of his favorite pastimes was to attend the Leominster and Fitchburg high school football games.

He was a member of many organizations which include the Masons, Morningstar Lodge, Central Electric Rail Fans Associations, Shoreline Interurban Historical Society, U.S. Naval Institute, Ancient Scottish Rites, and the Massachusetts Bar Association.

He leaves many cousins whom he spent his life with during holidays, graduations, weddings and thousands of sporting events. Bill had many great friends and a special thank you to George Doyle, Buddy Chandler, Joe Morrissey and Chet Chaisson who were always there for friendship and support.

A graveside service will be held at the All Faiths Cemetery, 7 Island Road, Worcester, MA on October 13, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. There are no calling hours and the family requests that all donations be sent to the American Diabetes Association.

Graham, Putnam & Mahoney Funeral Parlors, 838 Main St. are in charge of arrangements.

Peter, the boys and I were always glad to see Uncle Billy show up at one of the games.Whether it was Football or Baseball, sometimes rain or shine. We were glad to see him. The holidays we spent with him were filled with stories about the "old" and "new" sporting legends and statistics. He was truely "one of a kind" and he was fun to have around. My parents (Howard & Evelyn Elander) send their thoughts, as well. We will think about you often.

'Uncle Billy' will be sadly missed by all of us, especially by Cindi (Elander) Erlandsson and children Dax, Sonny, Vanessa and Reggie. His passion for educating us about various sports teams, their rivalries and current stats (at all of our holiday get-togethers) will never be forgotten. Sleep well, Uncle Billy.

In his day, when Bill felt well, he was one of the best people for whom I've ever worked! He was generous to me and my family and we will always remember his goodness, as well as his friendly nature.

We will all miss Billy's clever wit and enthusiasm for high school sports, trains and historic facts.
