William D. Rondeau Sr.

William D. Rondeau, Sr. died on Dec. 5, 2007.

He was born in Mendon, on Oct. 13, 1923. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Ellen E. Rondeau. He also leaves his five children, William Jr. and his wife JoAnn of Bellingham, Walter and his wife Nancy of Roanoke, VA, James of Campbell, CA, Raymond and his wife Debbie of Northbridge, and Beverly and her husband Alan Donheiser of Cotuit. He also leaves 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren and two of his seven siblings, Teresa Chaplin of Milford and Edward "Joe" Rondeau of Uxbridge.

Mr. Rondeau enlisted in the Navy and served his country during WW II in the Pacific. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local #170. He was also a founding member of the Local #170 Credit Union in Worcester and served as a director for over 30 years. He worked for Rosenfeld Concrete for 33 years retiring in 1989. He had previously been employed at Hopedale Coal & Ice.

Mr. Rondeau faithfully served his hometown in many capacities including 5 years as police officer and 9 years as Chief of Police. In 1959, Chief Rondeau made a request for a police cruiser for the town. At the time, the Police Department was considered to be part-time, but the town's need was round-the-clock. The Chief and his wife gave selflessly to their town for 9 years, including answering police telephone and radio calls at all hours 7 days a week. In addition, Chief Rondeau served as Dog Officer, Sealer of Weights & Measures and Constable. He was a familiar face at all local elections, staying until the last vote was counted. He was concerned for all the citizens of Mendon, mentoring young Boy Scouts and always ready to offer a helping hand to the elderly.

After helping to build the Mendon Senior Center in 1990, Mr. Rondeau drove the Senior Van for 10 years. He belonged to the Friends of the Elders and could always be counted on for a lively game of cribbage. In his spare time, he greatly enjoyed participation in the Uxbridge VFW Horeshoe League on the team of his son Raymond who was the Team Captain.

Funeral services, with full military honors will be held on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007 at 1 PM in the BUMA SARGEANT FUNERAL HOME, 42 Congress St., Milford, MA., 01757.

Visiting hours will be Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007 from 2-5 PM in the funeral home.
