Dwight E. Rice, 90, of Tellico Village, passed away Feb. 1, 2023.
He was a strong, loving and generous patriarch of our family. He was a very direct, straight-shooting man with a good sense of humor who cared deeply for all of his family. He came from roots in the farming community in Iowa.
Dwight served his country 1951-1955 in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot of the F89D Scorpion aircraft. After his service, he graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and worked in the hydraulic dredging industry throughout his career.
After retiring, Dwight and his then wife, Mary, built a home 30 years ago in Tellico Village. He spent many years enjoying golf, square/round dancing, boating, fishing and going to the Smokies. He had a strong interest in nature and especially birds. He was adept at fixing things and functional woodworking projects until his loss of vision became too great.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; parents, Nora and Clarence Rice; and sister, Dorothy Cunningham.
He is survived by his daughter, Pamela Banning (Duane); sons, Michael Rice (Cathy) and Mark Rice (Kathy); grandchildren, Rachel and Becky Banning, Christine Pitsenbarger (Kevin), Eric Rice and Tim and Julie Rice; great-granddaughter, Mary Jean Pitsenbarger; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, 2023, at the Rice home in Tellico Village, 135 Kiowa Way.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Tennessee Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, 1001 Rep. John Lewis Way N, Nashville, TN 37219.
