It is hard to believe Dr. Anderson has been gone for seven years. He was without a doubt the most talented Surgeon I have ever had the honor of working with. He taught me so much about sports medicine surgery, but more importantly, he taught me about life and living the life Christ would want me to. Many a day we shared in the operating room. The patients he helped were so grateful. I know he is smiling down on his family, but I also know that Allen is probably writing a paper on ACL reconstruction or shoulder rotate cuff repair. Rock on Dr. Anderson, I miss you, old friend!

February 6, 2020

My name is Sherrie McClanahan Fleming I worked for Dr. Anderson in 1983 and had the great opportunity to work for the St. Thomas Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Clinic and the other doctors including Dr. Brant Lipscomb who was amazing. I was stunned to learn of his passing this past weekend when I was going to go by and say hello and then found out he had passed. I can say with all my heart Dr. Anderson was the best in his talent and skill and was genuinely concerned about his patients, as well as his staff. Dr. Anderson gave his humanity to all and gave to his family first and foremost. I truly can say that he was such an inspiration to me and I believe to others that knew him. You will. E truly missed and God Bless You for all of your works thru Christ and God Bless your family - RIP my friend.

My original entry was November 20, 2017 after I learned of the passing of Dr Anderson. We still think of him often and will alway remember how he took such good care of our son, Luke, when he was 8 years old and tore his ACL playing football. We always planned to go back to Tennessee to see Dr Anderson and let him know in person what an impact he had on Luke and our family and I am saddened that we did not get that opportunity before he passed. It is now Luke's senior year and he will be attending Cornell University and playing football for the Big Red in the fall. In Luke's essay for college, he credited the lessons he learned in hard work and perseverance after his injury and surgery with much of his success as a football player and person today. We will continue to keep Dr Anderson's family and those who loved him in our prayers.

I just learned that Allen had passed away last year after referring someone to him. I knew him from my days at Vanderbilt and later when I was the Assistant Director of Surgery, Management at St. Thomas Hospital West. He did an arthroscopy on me and has seen all my children in some capacity. I had the highest respect for him, his surgical skills along with being a true gentleman.

I also hunted and fly fished with him. He was also very religious and that was another trait I admired about him. I know he is with God in Heaven and still watching over his family. I will miss you but know you left a lasting impression on everyone who knew you.

May God always Bless your family and we will see each again one day.

I am heartbroken. Dr. Anderson was truly a great man. He cared for his patients like no one I have ever seen. He listened to your concerns and would do anything in his power to help get you better. His faith in God and his willingness to share always made one feel safe and at ease prior to surgery. He always went above and beyond. I always told him I would never let anyone operate on me but him. Following one of my surgeries when I had come in for a checkup we became aware that a blood clot had formed in my shoulder/arm, due to no fault of Dr. Anderson. He stayed with me from the time of my ultrasound was done until I was admitted to my room and all day until the danger had passed of the clot moving. He prayed with me throughout the day and gave me total peace that everything was going to be fine. I don't know of any physicians with this level of commitment to their patients. He will be truly missed by everyone. So saddened.

DR. Anderson cared about what happened to me in an work accident & not being helped for 12 weeks before he got my case; he not only rebuilt my shoulder but also my spirit and faith in others and he championed my case to the state about lapse in care. He was an excellent doctor; and moreover a good man and ever so a fine human-being. GOD BLESS HIM, he is missed.

Dr. Anderson was an amazing Dr. and had so much compassion. I'm thankful from a friend I found him to do my knee surgery. It was a long road to recovery but he always had faith in me. Dr. Anderson always cared so much for my son Javon. He would always give him advice on sports and it has made such a difference. Javon has played hockey since he was 5 and plays basketball. With Dr. Anderson's knowledge and compassion. Javon's goal is to play hockey or basketball and to go to college for Sports Management. Sometimes all it takes is for 1 person to care so much and show so much compassion. We will always remember a life that helped others and loved his job and family. May God Bless this amazing family and Dr. Anderson in heaven. You will be so missed but you are now at peace with the good Lord.

Dr. Anderson and Family❤. Thank you for taking care of me and caring so much for my son Javon.

Mrs Anderson,

My name is Don Haynes and I am certified in orthotics. I worked with TOA doctors since 1990 and in the clinic several years. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Dr Andersons death. He was a caring referral source and I respected him very much. He was also treating me personally for a knee problem. I cannot imaging your loss, but know that many will miss him.

Thinking about the Anderson family today and sending you love. Dr. Anderson was very special to my family and we are so thankful to him.

When I dislocated my knee and tore 3 of 4 of my ligaments I needed a very complicated surgery. After interview multiple surgeons, Dr Anderson was referred to me. He completed my 8 hour surgery and was a true gift from God to me and my husband. This was a very scary time and Dr. Anderson's amazing bedside manner meant everything to my husband and me.

Often when we hike or are walking we say thank you to Dr. Anderson for how he took care of us. My memory of him is his kind eyes and his smile reached his eyes.

I know he must be missed by his family. Please know that Dr. Anderson was so loved and touched so many lives.

We are thinking of you all and sending love and prayers.

God Bless you all.

Our family is so saddened to hear of the loss of Dr Anderson. He was such a wonderful person and doctor and over the years, we have shared that with many people!! We live in Lexington, KY and in 2010, when my son was only 8 years old and tore his ACL and lateral meniscus playing football, we believe that God led us to Dr Anderson! We had initially taken our son, Luke, to Cincinnati Children's to see Dr. Wall. Dr Wall explained to us he wanted to do a technique to reconstruct Luke's knee that he had learned under Dr. Allen Anderson, who pioneered it. As it turned out, Dr Wall was not in our network for insurance. So, we took him to an orthopedic surgeon in Lexington who wanted to do the surgery but had only done a few younger kids and who had a completely different approach and rehab plan. We were so worried about making the best decision for Luke and researched as much as possible but we were still not sure about what to do. So, I decided to just email Dr Anderson, to ask for his opinion, thinking that it was probably unlikely I would hear back from him. I heard back from him within a couple of hours and he asked for our number so he could call us over Thanksgiving break. He called the day after Thanksgiving and spoke to both my husband and me for over 40 minutes, easing our mind and answering all our questions. Who does that?!! And on his holiday break!!! Long story short, St Thomas Hospital and Dr Anderson ended up being in our insurance network and he worked us right in to his busy schedule and saw to it that Luke could have his surgery during his Christmas break while he was off school. I will never forget how he spoke directly to Luke like a little man and explained to him that while his job was to do the surgery to fix his knee, Luke's job was to do the rehab and exercises for everything to end up being successful and for his him to reach his goal of returning to playing sports. Luke loved him and his staff from the very first meeting. We had complete confidence in him taking care of our son!
Luke had his surgery and spent the night at the Inn at St Thomas. Dr Anderson made a point to come see Luke at his first PT session the day after surgery. He was very comforting and encouraging to Luke and I loved him for that. Fast forward 7 years and Luke just finished his sophomore year football season. He has been able to enjoy youth sports (baseball, basketball and football) because or Dr Anderson and we will never forget what an impact he had on our family.
Our condolences to Dr Anderson's family, friends, co-workers and all those touched by his presence. We will continue to keep you in our prayers during this difficult time.

My family and I are truly heartbroken over this news. I have known Dr Allen Anderson as a patient for almost 15 years. He was always one of my favorites amongst my family of doctors. He understood my illness's with great compassion and tremendous knowledge. I will be forever grateful. I recently moved to Kansas . It was my plan to return to Nashville to have him perform my double knee replacement. I could not see having anyone else. I will truly miss him. My heart, thoughts and deep prayers for his beloved wife, sons, their families, co workers, and especially Jonathan . As well as all of the many patients/ people that he touched throughout his career and life. It gives me great peace and comfort knowing he is in the beloved arms of our Savior, Jesus Christ. May the Holy Spirit encompass his loved ones in peace, everlasting love, comfort, grace and mercy. Especially in the upcoming days. Until we are all reunited in God's glorious kingdom. God bless all

I am so saddened by the news of Dr. Anderson's passing. My heart goes out to his family. I have known him in a professional capacity for over 30 years, creating medical illustrations for his many publications and talks. He was always a pleasure to work with, quiet and gentle in his explanations and praise. In recent years, Allen proudly revealed that his son Chris had followed in his footsteps and asked me to create medical illustrations for him as well. I know how well he was loved and respected by his patients and peers. He was a wonderful human being. My deepest sympathy to the Anderson family for your loss.

Allen and l were traveling fellows together. He was the kind of man that you liked from the moment you met him. Funny how little things come to memory, but l remember Allen and l sitting on a beach outside Hongkong. We were taken there on day spent being hosted on Chinese junk to see the sights. Allen started making what he called drippy sand castles and reminiscing about how would play with his boys making those little castles. There he was thousands of miles from Nashville, but his family was always on his mind. Later we had a chance to jump off the boat from about 2 stories above the water. Allen didn't hesitate to display his diving form(l chickened out). Years later, Allen joined me and other sportsmedicine docs on a fishing trip to Kulic Lodge in Katmai Alaska . Allen was one of the best fly fisherman l have ever known.Allen was a complete and spirtual man-with his family, his friends, his patients, students and his colleagues. I am blessed to have known him and l am deeply saddened by his passing.

His son Chris fixed my right knee, but I have a great story to tell. A friend visited Dr. A. with a knee complaint and Allen recommend surgery X. My friend, being a lawyer, said he would get second opinion. He went to the Mayo Clinic where the diagnosis was confirmed and the procedure recommended. My friend ask who, in the Nashville area, they would recommend for the procedure. They responded " Oh, we send all our patients from Tennessee to Dr. Anderson! Christ is the great healer, and I am told he was always looking over Allen's shoulder in the operating room.

There are no words to describe the grief I feel for the whole family & those that worked with him, that he considered friends. I do not only send my deepest sympathy, but comfort, healing & unending faith to get you thru the days when all has quieted.
I not only worked for & with him in the 80's, but he put my precious daughters ankle back together, that seemed, might be, beyond repair. We spoke often of our children.
I saw him just before moving to Vancouver, Wa. with my son-in-law, daughter & 2 grandsons. He made me laugh so hard when he said, "watch out for those people in Portland( Or. is just across the river)". I said, "why?", he said, "cause they're weird!". He really loved his local folk. No doubt about it.
I expect the the young ones in the family to be overwhelmed by the number of people that come to pay respect. They will know how good he was at his God given talent & how much he was loved & respected. I will miss him and will pray for all of you.

We have so many memories. Allen operated on my daughters, both scholarship athletes. His skill allowed them to remain competitive, award winning pitchers in secondary and collegiate athletics. He was concerned, involved, and an advocate for them throughout their athletic careers. Allen was truly a gift. He went above and beyond in the care and concern for me and my children. Dr Anderson repaired my ACL and bucket handle tear of my cartilage in my right knee 30 years ago. I have always said how great he was of a surgeon. His bedside manner when I was in the hospital and my visits post-operatively with him were fantastic and he seemed to really care. I saw him again in 2006 and he said he remembered me. I was the subject of one of his papers he wrote on ACL repairs.

I know Dr Anderson's family has heard, many times, how great of a surgeon he was and how he was appreciated in the medical community and by his patients. Here is one more for your list of stories.

To Dr. Anderson's family...I know the life of a surgeon was hard on a family but Dr. Anderson helped so many people and was appreciated by so many of his patients. Thank you for sharing him with the rest of us because so many of us benefited from his skill and hard work. I will keep your family in my prayers.

I am so truly sorry for your great loss. My prayers and thoughts are with all of you. I was blessed to have Dr Anderson as a physician and surgeon for approximately 5 years. He never neglected to speak to me about his Lord and Savior. I remember the first day I met him: We shook hands and i said ," Again I must say Dr McGhee was right on target again, he speaks of you as the
'greatest physician in the world.' He quietly and humbly replied ," The greatest physician is My Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. I am just a vessel He works through." for the next 5 years that was the nanner with which he spoke, giving God the credit always. My prayers will continue to be with all the family, friends, patients, and coworkers at St Thomas. Our lives have been greatly blessed to have known such a Child of God in our life.Your loss is great and the journey of grief is long. Prayerfully yours, Sue Harrison and Family (Bowling Green, KY)

Not only was Allen one of my husband's favorite hunting buddies, but our family will be forever grateful for the incredible care he gave to our elderly mother. He was endlessly patient with her and showed her such deep compassion. I know her story is one of many. He was a bright light in this world.
Praying God's comfort and love will sustain you, and that you may take hope in the assurance that Allen rests in the presence of God.

There has never been nor will there ever be another Doctor like Dr. Anderson. In the 14 years that he helped me, I never once seen him without a smile or his extremely mild and soft spoken personality. He will truly be missed and I will be forever grateful for the work he did for me.

I am so deeply saddened by this news and my prayers are with his family and the staff at TOA. Dr Anderson replaced my knee in Feb. 2016 and repaired my shoulder twice this year 2017. In searching for medical insurance for 2018 the past two days I was seeking for company that Dr. Anderson was in network or I would not select that company. It will be incredibly difficult going to my follow up appointment on 12/1/17 for my 8 week post op evaluation.
This world has truly lost a wonderful man full of compassion but heaven's gain and I know I will see him again.

My deepest condolences are extended to the family and friends of Dr. Allen Anderson. My heart is heavy. I had the luxury of working with him when he worked in conjunction with Tennessee State University athletics and Saint Thomas Hospital. His talents and skills can never be replaced. The kindness he showed and time he spent teaching were invaluable. He was beloved by many. He will be missed.

I am extremely sorry for your loss. Dr. Anderson had been my surgeon for the last 5 or 6 years and performed 3 knee surgeries on me. My most recent surgery was in May 2017. He was a wonderfully compassionate man which is often rare in surgeons. My thoughts and prayers to his family and friends during this very difficult time.
