Charles Frank CAMPBELL Jr.

CAMPBELL, JR., Charles (Chuck) FrankAge 70, died at Vanderbilt Medical Hospital on Saturday, July 30, 2011 after a four month valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Cathryn Campbell and his only sibling, Carilyn Hubrich. Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Judy; two sons, and "daughters", Charles Frank Campbell III (Chip) and his wife Brenda and Alan and his wife Emily; five grandchildren, Chas (Charles IV), Reid, Sawyer, Cooper, and Payton who loved their "Papa" very much, his "Mom and cheerleader" Anna Ray, his "brother" Jerry and his wife Sharon. Since retirement his favorite pal has been "Katie." Chuck was a member of the 1958 graduating class at Shawnee. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in 1962 with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and in 1969 received his Master's Degree in Instrumental Music from Austin Peay State University. In 2006 Chuck retired after 31 years as a public school band director. During this time, Chuck directed bands in Kentucky at East Hardin High School, George Rogers Clark High School, and North Hardin High School. Under his direction his marching and concert bands have received national recognition. The North Hardin High School Band received both the Sudler Shield and the Flag of Honor from the John Phillip Sousa Foundation. Both the George Rogers Clark and North Hardin High School Bands performed at the Midwest Clinic under his direction. In addition, the North Hardin Wind Symphony performed in such venues as the Kentucky Music Educators Conference, Bands of America National Concert Band Festival, and Carnegie Hall. The East Hardin Rebeleer Band traveled to Winnipeg, Canada where they received recognition in both marching and concert venues. In 2008-2009, Chuck served as interim director of the University of Louisville Symphonic Band. He was a member of the Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity Hall of Fame, a 2001 Alumni of the Year in the music department at Eastern Kentucky University, a 2003 Kentucky High School Music Teacher of the Year, and a 2009 recipient of the Citation for Service presented by the Kentucky Music Educators Association. One of the highlights of Chuck's career was his induction into the American Bandmasters Association, a goal that he never dreamed that he would achieve. For the past three years, Chuck has shared his teaching philosophies with student teachers and interns from Western Kentucky University. In 1978, Chuck left education for 11 years and worked in the area of sales for Henco, Inc. In that capacity he continued working with people and helping school groups, especially music programs raise money to continue their programs. Throughout the last four months, the Campbell family emphasized that they did not want to fight this battle alone. Visitation for the celebration of Chuck's life will be on Tuesday, August 2 from 12-8 p.m. at Glendale Christian Church.
