THORNE, Charles Brooks, M.D.Born October 22, 1924 in Wooster, OH. Passed away peacefully at his home on September 2, 2009, his beloved Westie, Abby, at his side. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, JoAnn S. Thorne. Survived by daughters, Lucy Keller (Ron) of Memphis, TN, Nancy Atwater (Michael) of N. Palm Beach, FL and Holly White (Rusty) of Pittsburg, TX. Dr. Thorne was "Papa" to nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also survived by his darling sisters-in-law, Paula Schaeffer and Isabelle Schaeffer both of Dayton, OH; and eight nieces and nephews all of whom he adored. Dr. Thorne attended Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA and UCLA. He received his MD Degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1949. After concluding his internship in internal medicine at Strong Memorial in Rochester, NY, he returned to Vanderbilt for his residency where he was Chief Resident from 1955-56. He served both in the Navy and the Air Force. Dr. Thorne established the Vanderbilt Employees' Clinic in the late fifties. He was named to the American Society of Hematology and certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. His greatest career privilege was practicing medicine with the late Dr. Harrison Shull Sr., Dr. Paul Stumb and Dr. Harrison Shull, Jr. For 37 years, "Charlie" was devoted to his patients and colleagues. His passion for teaching guided him as Associate Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt. Upon retirement at age 69, Dr. Thorne worked as a physician at the Dayani Center until 2006. Dr. Thorne was honored in 1982 by the Ladies' Home Journal as one of the top internists in the South and Physician of the Year in 1997 by the Tennessee Medical Association. Some of his professional memberships included trustee and chairman for the Tennessee Medical Association; vice-chairman for the Quality Assurance Committee, PSRO; and delegate for the American Medical Association. He was a dedicated member of Old Oaks Club. The family wishes to thank Vanderbilt Home Care and Odyssey Hospice for their compassionate care. Dr. Thorne and Mrs. Thorne were such great friends of our family as we were growing up. Dr. Thorne was my doctor for many years and I was able to keep up with the girls (Lucy and I are the same age) for a long time. He was a wonderful and gentle man and I am thankful he and Mrs. Thorne were such a part of my life and that of my family. My thoughts and prayers go to the girls and all the grandchildren.

My family lived next door to the Thorne family during the years I was in high school 1955-1959. They were a wonderful family. I babysat for their daughters - Lucy, Nancy and the twins Heather and Holly.
Such cute girls ! Later when I was a young adult Dr. Thorne was my internal medical doctor. He was a wonderful man and doctor - so kind and gentle. God bless him !

I never knew Dr. Thorne. I only knew "Charlie", a delightful man who, every morning, on my walks with my Westie named Baxter, would slowy idle up to a stop in his little car, roll down the back window, and let Abby, his Westie, and Baxter "commune" for a few moments. Charlie and I would briefly discuss the weather, exchange a pleasantry, and congratulate each other on having the good fortune to have Westies in our world.

He was delighted a few months ago, when he saw that we had added another Westie to our family. Mollie and Abby looked like twins.

I've been looking for Charlie lately and resigned myself to the fact that I probably wouldn't get to visit with him again.

After he lost his wife last year, he told me one day that he was comforted by his beloved Abby. And she was there for him until the very end. A loyal companion, indeed.

I'll miss Charlie and trust that Abby will be loved and cherished by her next care giver.
