DeWitt THOMPSON Obituary

THOMPSON III, DeWitt ClintonDied the morning of Monday, August 23, 2010 in his sleep at his home. Born September 18, 1917 to his now deceased parents, mother, Mary Gibson Thompson and father, DeWitt C. Thompson, Jr. He was also preceded by his sister, Sue Thompson Fort. DeWitt is survived by his wife of 68 years, Diana Roberts Thompson; his brother, Hall W. Thompson (Lucille) and his sister, Betty Thompson Hobbs. He is also survived by his daughter, Mary Becca Cherry and her children, Diana Finlayson (Reid), Bill Cherry (Kelli), and Elizabeth Barrett (Charles); his son, DeWitt Thompson IV (Jackie) and his children, DeWitt Thompson V (Jamee), Mary Britton Cummings (Jody), John Thompson (Margaret) and Jacqueline Towery (McClain); his daughter, Diana Wilker (Marvin) and her children, Scott Alden, Katharine Mosher (Bryan), Niel Alden and Laura Rebecca Alden; and his daughter, Carolyn Beckner (Jim) and her children, Catherine Perry (Chase), Jim Beckner, Jr., Diana Beckner, Helen Beckner and Jack Beckner; as well as his 15 great-grandchildren. DeWitt was truly the prototypical patriarch of his relatively large family. He was affectionately known as "Pop" to all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, in whom he took great pride and interest as they grew and developed. Throughout most all his life, DeWitt had a passionate interest in sports, especially golf, football, and baseball. In his younger years, he was a well-accomplished golfer, and he was a life long and avidly faithful supporter of the Vanderbilt Football team. He attended Vanderbilt University before enlisting in the Army Air Corps, where he served as a flight instructor throughout World War II. After his military service, throughout his business career, he continued his engagement and enthusiastic interest in flying. Upon return from military service, DeWitt joined the company recently started by his father and George Green as the 13th employee of Thompson and Green Machinery Company, a Caterpillar Dealership. He was always very appreciative of the opportunity to be a Caterpillar Dealer; and he was passionate about the company's many products throughout his entire life, well after his retirement from chairmanship of the dealership. As a businessman, he also was very focused upon the customers who purchased Caterpillar machines, and he especially appreciated those well-established construction companies in the late 1940's (like Oman Construction Company) whose patronage he always credited with giving Thompson and Green an initial chance to be successful. In 1957, he helped his father and brother establish a new Caterpillar Dealership in Northern Alabama, Thompson Tractor Company, and then in 1987, he assisted Thompson and Green in its acquisition of two other Caterpillar Dealerships, one in West Tennessee and one in North Mississippi. In his extracurricular activities, he gained much enjoyment and gratification from his involvement with the care and development of the Belle Meade Country Club golf course. And, in his retirement years, he spent most winters in the North Palm Beach area, where he enjoyed sharing with many friends and family members his membership in the Seminole Golf Club. DeWitt also loved his many beagle dogs, and he was a dedicated supporter of the Nashville Humane Association. The Thompson family expresses its great appreciation for the caregivers who generously gave of themselves in special and loving care for the past few weeks within the Thompson home: Beverly, Elizabeth, Samantha, Cherrie, Crystal, Renee and Anthony. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Vanderbilt University Athletics, the Vanderbilt Medical Center, the Nashville Humane Association, or a charity of one's choice. Visitation is planned for Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 10 a.m., in Courtenay Hall of the First Presbyterian Church, 4815 Franklin Road, Nashville, TN, with a Memorial service to follow at noon, in the sanctuary of the church.

Mr Thompson would come visit me in his golf cart with his beagles when I was building a house across the street from him. I would show him around and he would ask me about the house. Later I did a renovation on his home.He was a fine gentleman.

Mrs. Thompson
I'm sorry I missed the funeral but I am sure you had plenty of family and friends to support you and help you through this time. You and Mr. Thompson was always kind and treated me very fair when I was remolding your home. I always enjoyed Mr. Thompson's stories and his visits. Mr. Thompson would come by in his golf cart with his dogs and I would show him around the neighbor's house I was building.
My father died two years ago and I believe my mother has coped with his death by being with family, going out with friends but mainly her faith in God.

As relative newcomers to the Thompson circle, we are honored to have known Mr. Thompson. Dad, Anita and I have fond memories of our time in Nashville surrounding Diana and Reid's wedding. Now we know the full meaning of southern hospitality.

Mr. Thompson was a wonderful person to know. As a patient it was a great experience to attend to him. I always enjoyed his visits to my office and found him to be an exceptional gentleman and so wonderful to talk with.

He loved his family and held such warm feelings for them. The members of the family that I met were all a testament to the greatness of their parents.

He will be missed by many and the Nashville community will have a terrible loss.

Mr. Thompson's avid support of Vanderbilt Football made a very deep impression on me for life. His generosity set an example for everyone who knew him. Men like Dewitt Thompson III are what have made Nashville such a great city to live in. May God have mercy on him and give him peace.

Becoming an employee as young man in 1965, for Mr. DeWitt; I have many happy memories that I have carried into my retirement since 1991. He loved us all and showed it everyday just as he did to his own family. To you family members, Mrs. Thompson, De IV, Diana, Mary Becca, Carolyn, spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren my prayers are with you during these changing times in your lives. Thanks for always sharing Mr. DeWitt with us employees. The experience is full of many blessings. I wish many continuing GOD'S blessings upon each of you.

Fondly,
Jim Henson, Retiree 1991

He was a wonderful person to have known. He cared about his employees and customers and went above and beyond to prove how much he cared. Never will forget the way that he would kick up his heels at the Christmas parties. Several times he made us feel like one big family, that is the person that he was. He will be greatly missed by many. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Diana and family.

We were sad to hear about Mr. Dewitt's passing. We had the privilige of meeting Mr. Dewitt when he and his wife, Diana, hosted a party for my brother Reid and Diana prior to their wedding, As we were saying goodbye at the door after the party, I recall saying to Mr. Dewitt that he had a beautiful home and family and he replied that it was his family that he was most proud of. Our thoughts are with you at this time.

It was a genuine pleasure to work with Mr Dewitt for so many years. He never failed to ask me about my family (and call them by name). Business seemed such a pleasurable task to him. We have lost a great mentor. Please accept my deepest sympathies in your loss.
