Edgar Davie Obituary

Edgar Byron Davie

Nashville - Edgar Byron Davie, was born on December 1, 1933 and died on August 3, 2020 in Nashville, Tennessee at the age of 86.

Edgar is survived by his beloved wife, Kathleen McMahon Davie, and his children, Shawn Davie, Dorinda Davie, Michael Davie, Brian Davie, Colleen Davie Janes, Patrick Davie, Erin Davie, and Rosetta Smedley. He is preceded in death by his father, Edgar Brian Davie, his mother, Hazel Elizabeth Davie, his brother, James Patrick Davie, and his granddaughter, Megan Rawlins.

Edgar was born in Bristol, Tennessee, and he graduated from Vanderbilt University in June, 1958 with a Bachelor of Engineering. Edgar worked as a civil engineer for the State of Tennessee, and he went on to hold a variety of positions within the field. As a leader in his field, Edgar was the first Director of Tennessee Ready Mix Concrete Association, and he was integral in the development of the School of Concrete and Construction Management program at Middle Tennessee State University. Throughout his career, Edgar designed many bridges and overpasses throughout the state of Tennessee.

Edgar proudly served his country as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army. He was also passionate about politics, his community, and Edgar was a Republican candidate for the offices of the fifth congressional district and for the Tennessee General Assembly. Additionally, he served on the Davidson County Election Commission.

Edgar was an accomplished athlete, and attended Vanderbilt University on a full athletic scholarship. Edgar earned the title of Southeastern Conference Wrestling champion during his tenure at Vanderbilt University. He was also a member of the 1955 Vanderbilt University SEC Gator Bowl winning team. As an athlete at heart, Edgar continued to compete into his senior years, and he was a gold medalist in cycling in the Senior Olympics.

Edgar's boundless talents also included author, businessman, scuba diver, and celebrated portrait artist. Edgar would light up when discussing his children, and he would often say his best accomplishments in his life were his children, whom he loved dearly. He was a devout Catholic, and he always had room at the dinner table for his family and friends. Edgar was a huge presence and will be missed by all who knew him.

Due to Covid-19, a public funeral service is not planned at this time. A memorial will be held in the future to honor Edgar's life, and all will be welcome to celebrate in his life at that time. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes any donations to be made in Edgar's name to the Vanderbilt Athletic Association and the Alzheimer's Association.

I will miss him. We had many interesting discussions, usually at Ellison Place Soda Shop. He supported me and my work. Politically we were miles apart. He had a thing or two to say when he saw my latest Democratic bumper sticker. Never deterred our friendship. Good thoughts to you, my friend!
