He was born on April 30, 1943 in Columbus, MS to the late Elbert Drungo, Sr. and Mary Jane Drungo. He graduated from R.E. Hunt High School in Columbus where he was the captain of the football team. After his retirement, he spent four years as an offensive line coach at Fisk University. He also was employed with the Davidson County Sheriff's Department.

In 1972, Drungo married the love of his life, Deborah L. McMichael, and to this union, one child was born, Mary Evelyn Drungo. "Drungo" had a strong faith in God, and was a dedicated member of Lake Providence Missionary Baptist Church.
