I was a Phi Mu sorority sister of Eleanors at Miami. While I did not know her well, I was shocked & saddened to learn of her passing while reading the Chapter Eternal section of our recent national alumnae magazine. I recall her as being a kind, sweet and gentle soul and also extremely intelligent. My deepest sympathy to her family.

Eleanor, her sister, Virginia, and I played together as children when they visited their Spetnagel relatives in Atlanta. Our favorite thing to do was to dress up and play with our "Mandy" dolls and to play on my swing set. She was a wonderful friend and an extremely intelligent person. I always looked so forward to her visits. She will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. God bless Eleanor's soul, and her family, who will miss her the most.

On the same day we lost Eleanor, we lost our nearly 100yo oak tree that stood in front of the State Center for Health Statistics (SCHS) building. One can't overlook the coincidence; how that tree stood quiet & strong. It stood there no matter the season or storm, protecting us; unnoticed... until it was gone. Now, every day as we walk between the Cotton and Cooper buildings, past parking spot 41, something's different; something's missing.
Rest peacefully in that city beyond Oaks.

The State Center for Health Statistics (SCHS) lost it's near 100yo Oak tree the same day of Eleanor's passing... rather coincidental and symbolic. We will miss her quiet strength here as our Director at SCHS. Rest peacefully.

Eleanor was an amazing person and I am glad I got to know her through playing Ingress. One of my favorite memories of her is when she helped to put a blue field over the NCSU Belltower when we brought out the TARDIS. I know she was an old school Doctor Who fan so of course we had to get her picture with it! :)

I am so sorry to hear of Eleanor's passing. I worked with her closely for several years and learned so much from her. She is one of my public health heroes, and North Carolina has greatly benefited from her leadership and expertise. My sincere condolences to her family, friends and public health colleagues.

I am so sorry for your loss of Eleanor and the world's loss. I got to know her by working on several projects with her over the past 5 years. She always helped me see the "glass half-full" in life. I will always remember her beautiful smile and love for cool purses, a passion we both shared.
