Howard Knight

Tallahassee - Tallahassee - Howard Gore Knight, 76, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Tallahassee Memorial Health Care.

His Homegoing Celebration will be 11:00 am Saturday, January 12, 2019, at the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 224 N. Martin Luther King, Boulevard, where he was a devoted deacon and dedicated servant. Burial will be in Culley's Meadowood Cemetery on Timberlane Road. The body will lie in state from 9:00 AM until funeral time Saturday. The Omega Memorial Service by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., will be held at 6:30 PM Friday, January 11, 2019, at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

Dr. Howard Knight was a graduate of Tennessee State University and a graduate of Florida A&M University's Law School in 1968. He worked for the Florida Legislature, Probation & Parole Commission and retired from the Florida Department of Transportation as a Minority Business Consultant. After retirement, Dr. Knight became a professor at Florida A&M University where he taught several political science classes where the students often remembered him by his resignating statement, "Don't take any wooden nickels".

Dr. Knight was also involved in several religious and community organizations including Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, 220 Quarterback Club, a lifetime member of FAMU Alumni Association and an active member with 100 Black Men of America, where he volunteered and mentored young men.

Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Odies Knight; daughter, Tiffany Estimond and dedicated son-in-law, Fritznel; four grandsons: Khalil, Kaleb, Kyle, and Koby Gore; brother-in-law, T.J. Wilkerson (Cleveland, Ohio), sisters-in-law, Cleo Allen (Mobile, Alabama), Yvonne Wilkerson (Brooklyn, New York) and a host of other relatives and friends.

Dr. Knight was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Grover Cleveland and Mrs. Florence Knight and his nine siblings.

I was privileged to work with Howard Knight when I was general counsel for the Florida Parole and Probation Commission from 1982 through 1985. Howard was always very professional in the discharge of his duties at the Commission and was helpful to the legal office in many ways. Years later when I saw him frequently at the downtown post office he always stopped to chat and exchange pleasantries. He was a true southern gentleman in every respect and his blessed memory will forever be with those who knew him.
