To Mike, Martha and all the family of Jim Bates, one word stands out to me as I remember Jim and that word is Genuine. Something or someone that is true or authentic. If you check the list I believe you would agree Jim had a genuine love for his Polly, for his family, for his country, for his military, for his fellow worker & associates. Genuine love for his community, love for his church, love for the less fortunate, love for the truth.
Jim was always willing to serve in any capacity where he could help anyone or any cause. The twinkle in his eyes as he shared a funny story about some of his adventures in life showed the dry-wit/humorous side he had. I always looked forward to lunch or visits with Mr. Bates. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to spend some special time with the Colonel in my travel down lifes highway. He was a genuine friend. With deepest sympathy and love.

Mr. Bates was, first and foremost, a man of God. When he was living a lone in his home, our small singing group would sing his favorite hymns. He would pause after each one and give us a small story from his past. He was a living and breathing history book and fountain of wisdom. I will cherish the many visits we made to encourage him. I know that our group was equally encouraged by him! May God comfort you, knowing he is in the presence of his Savior and his sweet wife.
