BARNES, Mary AliceAge 88, passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2011. Preceded in death by her parents, Bennie and Loy Felts; son, James D. Owen; brother, W.D. Felts; sister, Nellie Harper; husbands, James N. Owen, Charles H. Childress, Sr. and Robert L. Barnes. Survived by daughter-in-law, Peggy Owen of Centerville and granddaughters, Michelle Owen (Buddy Taylor) of Katy, TX and Laura Herritt (Jacob) of Maryville, TN; great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Ruth Herritt; step-daughter, Rita B. Bates (Mike) of Nashville; step- son, Ronald D. Childress (Debbie) of Atlanta; six step-grandchildren, Michael Bates (Robin) and Mark Bates (Ann) of Nashville, Bryan Childress and Brent Childress of Atlanta, Kelly Anderson (John) and Jason Childress of Smyrna; step- great-grandchildren, Emma Bates, Ellen Bates, Reese Bates, Keeley and Cason Smith of Nashville, Jeremy Childress of Atlanta and Joshua Anderson of Smyrna. In her lifetime, Mrs. Barnes was active in civic and church affairs. She served as president and vice president of Telephone Pioneers Life Members Club, a member of the Board of Bethlehem Centers of Nashville, secretary and treasurer of the board of directors of The Shopping Bag, Inc. Thrift Shop, secretary and treasurer of Soroptimist International of Nashville. She was active in church work at Calvary United Methodist Church and was an officer in United Methodist Women at the local, district and conference levels. Active Pallbearers are Mike Bates, Michael L. Bates, Mark L. Bates, Ron Childress, Bryan Childress and Buzz Maddox. Honorary Pallbearers are members of the Remnant Sunday School Class of Calvary United Methodist Church, members of Telephone Pioneers of America members of Soroptimist International of Nashville, staff of Waterford Assisted Living, Betty Young, Carol Coston, and Lu and Ray Conatser. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the library or scholarship fund of Calvary United Methodist Church, 3701 Hillsboro Road, Nashville, TN 37215; Bethlehem Centers of Nashville, 1417 Charlotte Avenue, Nashville, TN 37203; or Community Care Fellowship, 511 - 8th Street, Nashville, TN 37206. A celebration of Mary Alice's life will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Calvary United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Angus officiating. Visitation will be 3 - 7 p.m. Friday and 1 hour prior to the service Saturday. The visitation and service will be at the Church.
