Mary Boone Hash Obituary

Mary Ann Boone Hash

Nashville, TN

Mary Ann Boone Hash 02/12/1930-12/27/2015

Mary Ann died on Sunday of this week at age 85. She was born in Rocky Mount, VA, the third of four children. She received her elementary and high school education in that town. She attended Madison College, now James Madison University, receiving a B.A. degree in 1950. She taught high school in Franklin and Bedford Counties of Virginia. It was in the Bedford school system that she met her future husband, John H. Hash, who was teaching in the same county. This meeting was their second, the first having taken place 5 years previously at a friend's house. They became engaged and were married on June 13, 1953, while her husband was still in the Army. She then taught in various schools while John completed his doctorate in biochemistry at Virginia Tech.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Vester Boone, Sr., Vassie Greer Boone, her brother, James Andrew Boone, and her sister Doris Jean Boone Kennedy.

She is survived by her husband, and their three children, Debra Lynn Hash Ewin, Susan Ruth Hash Bjerkaas, Richard Glenn Hash, and six grandchildren. The two initially thought that their chance meetings in 1945 and 1950 were purely coincidental, but later in life they came to believe those meetings were providential. They were married 62 years.

Mary Ann was loved by her family and friends. She was active in reading groups, Sunday School, and the Vanderbilt Sewing Club. She was a long time member of Woodmont Baptist Church. She enjoyed traveling and after John's retirement they were able to travel widely. They visited all continents except Antarctica. Though unplanned, a highlight of her trips was a visit to the northernmost and the southernmost cities in the world; namely, Hammerfest, Norway and Ushuaia, Argentina. She spent a year in Belgium with their three children, where John was on Sabbatical study. She visited Rome in 1975 which was the Jubilee year for the Church. She participated in a ladies' group that visited many places in Belgium, Holland and Germany.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Woodmont Baptist Church, Woodmont Avenue on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016 with the Rev. Richard Dickerson officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 9:00 am to 10:50 am prior to the service at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Alive Hospice, 1718 Patterson St., Nashville, TN 37203 or alivehospice.org.
