Ray EMMETT Obituary

EMMETT, RayAge 75 of Goodlettsville, passed away June 2, 2013. He is preceded in death by his brother, Jeff Thorson. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Renee; daughters, Linda Kyle, Cheryl "Cookie" Marinaro; grandchildren, Jason, Andrea, Angela and Danielle; sister, Joan (Richard) Smith; sister-in-law, Kathy Thorson; nephews, Tim and Todd Thorson, Steve Smith, Preston Freeman, Jay Ryan Freeman; nieces, Karen Greenberg, Kim Kay, Kathy Sawyer, Janelle Ehrenstrom; numerous extended family. Ray loved porch sitting and singing his songs. Many of his friends will also remember him as "Quacker" and "Ralf". Ray was a recognized "front man" for many major artists including, Faron Young, George Jones, Billie Jo Spears, Mel Tillis, Jean Shephard, Tommy Overstreet and Cal Smith. He loved God, country music, country living, log houses, Hawaii and his fellow man. Family will receive friends Wednesday, June 5, 2013 from 6-8 p.m., at Cole & Garrett, Goodlettsville. Funeral Service 1 p.m. Thursday, with visitation 30 minutes prior to service at St. Joseph of Arimathea, Hendersonville. Father Jody Howard officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grand Ole Opry Trust Fund, http://www.opry.com/about/OpryTrustFund.html. Interment Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. I was under age and would sneak into Contos to watch "Ray Emmitt and the Superiors" play. Ray was a great front man/singer and the band kicked butt. I was friends with Craig Frost, Jack's son, who also played drums at the time with "The Outcast". Watching those two bands, with Jack & Craig on the drums is when I figured out what I wanted to do with my life. Watching Ray and Jack play at "Contos" made it the place to play. I wound up playing at "Contos" with three different bands. Thank you for the inspiration Ray; RIP and I'll see you when I get there.

Ray, Had some great times at Contos lounge and good barbeques at my house. You, Jonny Hawk Jack Frost the drummer and Curt his son. I tended bar there for a long time and we did party. The south end crew. You and Jonny playing them harps, great times good days. Miss you brother rest in peace you were one of the good ones.

It took over 50 years to see where Ray. Went to see him in Flint at Contos Bar on Dort Highway. Ray Emmett and the Superiors. I booked them in Saginaw at my theater a few times. I moved from Flint to California and lost track of them. The Ray sent an email to WTAC radio in Flint thanking them for helping his success there. And his email was showing. So I emailed him and I wanted to try to get a photo of the group. I asked their names and he said one was named Hawk. I recall he had a hit record at that time too. I sent him my book and time flies. I emailed him a year or two later and it came back deceased. I was in shock. Took so long to get in touch with him and then he was taken away. You know something. It was meant to be for me to find him again. I drove to Canada and he asked me to buy them Beatle wigs. Beatles were the new sensation and they were singing Beatle songs on stage. The wigs were never sold in the States.

Yes, I forgot this was Memorial Day. I sure wish his widowed wife would contact me. I am in Ohio and heading back to Flint in a few weeks.

I was shocked to learn Ray had died. It took over 55 years to find out where he was. I sent him a copy of my book and he is mentioned in it. So sad and I met him after so many years and now he was gone. I would like a copy of any picture there is from when they played at Contos. We were two months apart in our ages. I still find it hard that he is gone. I guess it was meant to be to get his email address from an email he sent to W.T.A.C. in Flint. He said he was called Quacker? I called him friend.

Ray was a dear friend from Contos Lounge in Flint MI. My wife Mary and I would go there every night after work. He knew 6 days on the road by Dave Dudley was my favorite song and he would always do it when we walked in. We will miss a friend an a fine musician.
