Roddy Story Obituary

STORY SR., Roddy L. Born April 4, 1924 to Mae Gill and Stacy Story in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Predeceased by his parents and wife, Dorothy Ruth Redmon Story. Survived by sons, Jody (Jena) Story and Roddy, Jr. (Ann) Story and grandsons, Stacy, Josh and Roddy III and granddaughter Elizabeth. Roddy moved to Nashville as a teenager where he attended Howard High school and met his future wife "Dot" and became a member of her family the "Redmons". He left high school in 1942 to serve in the Army Air Corp where he was a fighter pilot and achieved the rank of 2nd lieutenant. After the war he entered Vanderbilt and graduated Tau Beta Pi and Cum Laude from the School of Engineering. After college he began a 28 year career with the Nashville Gas Company where he retired as Senior Vice President. His interest were varied and included: travel (he went everywhere), sports (he loved Vanderbilt and followed the Titans), golf (he was really good and he was addicted), and especially his family. If there was a Parents day, a Thanksgiving play, a baptism, a birthday, horse show, t-Ball game, high school football game, or graduation he was there. He was a true "Southern Gentleman" and looked for and brought out the best in others. In his quiet way he led by example, believed in the Lord, was true to his word, never quit and helpful to others. Along the way he was: an athlete, thoughtful husband, father and grandfather, patriot, pilot, interested in everything, loyal friend and leader and model for others. He served as President of the Tennessee Gas Association, Board member of the Chamber of Commerce and Youth Incorporated, President's Council on Energy, was Lt. Colonel in the Air National Guard, player/coach with the Nashville Gas fast pitch softball teams, Cub Scout Master, Little League baseball coach and lifelong Methodist. A special thanks to his friends and caregivers Carol Baker, Susie Davis, Liz Churchwell and Rose Thompson. The family appreciates the guidance and support of Drs. Pharriss and Tai of Heritage Medical and Drs. Wassenger, Davis and Christenberry of Mid State Medical and the caring staff of Alive Hospice, Inc. Funeral service will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, November 29, 2008 in Woodlawn's Dignity Hall with the Reverend Dr. Charles Worrell officiating. After the service there will be a military funeral at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Members of the Redmon and Blackburn family will serve as Pallbearers. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to either Alive Hospice or the Vanderbilt School of Engineering. Visitation will be held on Friday from 3-7 p.m. and Saturday at 10:30-11:30 a.m. at WOODLAWN-ROESCH-PATTON FUNERAL HOME, 660 Thompson Lane, Nashville, TN 37204, (615)383-4754.

Roddy and I were instructors at advanced flying school in World War Two. We visited and kept in touch ever since then. He and Dot were two of our best friends.

Sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Roddy. May God hold you in the palm of His hands as you deal with this loss.

I missed out on knowing him as an adult, but, have fond memories of Roddy and his family from my days as a boy at Elm Street Methodist Church.

Rest in peace, good and faithful servant.

I first met Mr. Story on a cold winter day in the mid 1960's when he brought Roddy and Jody and a bunch of us played basketball on the outdoor courts at Norman Binkley School. I have enjoyed reconnecting with Mr. Story thru joining he, Roddy and Fred Smith at Vandy games. Mr. Story was held in great affection and will be missed. My condolences to the family.
