Don and I were classmates at Bunkie High School, and we attended the same church. What I find missing in all these tributes to Don is that none of them mention one of the attributes that I most liked about Don - his marvelous sense of humor that was heightened by his intelligence and observation.
I remember him as a very competent doctor both in medical practice and in bedside manner. He was my mother's doctor, and when she was dying of lung cancer, he helped me in meeting the stringent flying regulations to fly her to my home in California. With Don, it is not the icon that I remember - it is the personableness, friendliness, and helpfulness that I always found in him and that was especially shown in his helping me meet airline regulations to fly my mother to my home. To help me, he met me after hours in his Bunkie clinic and went over in detail what I needed to do for the flight and at home in California. I received no bill for this service - only well-wishes. Don did not let his many accolades inflate his ego. I never felt anything from him but the camaraderie
as classmates and friends.

Dr. Hines was a tremendous supporter of education in Avoyelles Parish and the state of Louisiana. He answered every call and responded to every request, a true server leader! He will be sadly missed.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Hines family as they say goodbye to their husband, father, grand and great grandfather. He was a great friend to many and loved by all. May the beautiful memories you shared warm your heart and bring you peace.
