Mary Smith

Mary Helen Morrisson Smith, 90, long time resident of Wayne, PA died November 4, 2018 in Charlottesville, VA, Born in Washington, DC on August 10, 1928 to the late Norman James and Mary (McCrummen) Morrisson, she grew up in Chevy Chase, MD. She was preceeded in death by her beloved husband, the Rev’d Sheldon Moody Smith, rector emeritus of the Washington Memorial Chapel, in 2008. She is survived by her daughter Mary Catherine Bluder and husband David of Quakertown, PA; daughter Margaret Schmidt and husband Peter of Charlottesville, VA; and grandchildren Jane M. Schmidt and Nicholas T. Bluder. She was predeceased by her brothers Norman James Morrisson, Jr., Robert Stone Morrisson, and Thomas Ern Morrisson. Mary Helen was a graduate of Bethesda Chevy Chase High School and an honors graduate of Bryn Mawr College. She worked as a chemist at both Johns Hopkins and Squibb before her marriage, and later in GE’s Aerospace Division. After her marriage, she and Sheldon lived in the Chicago area for 9 years before moving to Wayne in 1965, where she resided until moving to Charlottesville in 2016. In addition to her professional work, she was an active volunteer throughout her adult life with organizations including the American Red Cross, The Neighborhood League, Diocese of Pennsylvania Dolphin program, and Surrey Services for Seniors. She shared in her husband’s ministry, serving on church altar guilds, women’s guild, volunteering for countless church events, and working at the Washington Memorial Chapel Cabin. The funeral service will be held at The Washington Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, November 14, at 11:30 am, with interment to follow in the churchyard. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” (Psalm 116:15) Memorial contributions may be made to Surrey in Devon, PA or The Washington Memorial Chapel.
