Tommy Joyce Obituary

Tommy L. Joyce

GONZALES - Funeral services will held on Thursday, September 15, 2001 at Ourso Funeral Home in Gonzales for Tommy Lee Joyce, 62, of Prairieville. Joyce passed away at his Prairieville home early Tuesday.

The son of Murraye D. Joyce and the former Tommie Williams Joyce, Tommy Joyce was born in Tyler, Texas on December 15th, 1948, where he attended elementary school. His family then moved to Gueydan, Louisiana where he graduated from Gueydan High School in 1967.

Joyce attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana, where he became a member of the Air Force ROTC and Theta Xi Fraternity. Upon graduation from USL in 1971, Joyce married his childhood sweetheart Marlene LeBlanc of Lafayette. The couple moved to Little Rock where Joyce achieved the rank of captain and served as a pilot and instructor in the US Air Force during the Vietnam conflict, receiving numerous commendations and medals.

Upon leaving active duty, the Joyces moved to Sulphur where they reared a family of four children. Joyce enjoyed a successful career as a manager at Powell Lumber, where he received the Powell Leadership Award. He later became owner and general manager of Baskin Robbins, twice earning the franchise's 31 Club honor. He then became an owner and general manager of Port Printing, founder and first CEO of the KaleidoScoops ice cream franchises, and more recently owner and general manager of Tommy's Printing and Promotional Items of Sulphur and Baton Rouge.

Joyce was an avid community leader and volunteer. He served as a director of the Boy Scout council, served numerous years as board member and trustee of Our Lady's School in Sulphur, was regional and state director of the American Red Cross, was president of the Young Men's Business Club and a two-time recipient of Citizen of the Year award. He was founder of the Louisiana National Air Show, was a Board member of the March of Dimes, and a member of the Sulphur Rotary Club. Joyce served as president of the Buccaneers and was chosen to be the Jean Lafitte of Contraband Days in 1985. More recently, Joyce was a member of the North Ascension Rotary Club, president and regional director of Business Network International and a member of the Ascension Parish Leadership Council.

Joyce earned an MBA from McNeese State University in 1983 and was a life-long supporter of Cowboy Athletics as a board member of the Quarterback Club, member of the Tip Off Club and well-known among Cowboy fans as a Chalet sponsor.

Joyce is survived by his wife of 38 years Marlene LeBlanc Joyce; one brother, Mark Joyce of Houston; two sons, Chad Joyce of Prairieville and Jason Joyce and his wife Caroline of Baton Rouge; two daughters, Kimberly Joyce McLaughlin and her husband Nathan McLaughlin of Geismar and Aimee Joyce Bellue and her husband Trey of Slaughter; four grandsons, Logan McLaughlin, Cade Carver, Camden Carver, Casen Carver; and two granddaughters, Baleigh Bellue and Isabelle Bellue. He was proceeded in death by his parents and a brother, Murraye Joyce.

Visitation will held from 5:00-9:00 pm on Wednesday, September 14 and again on Thursday morning beginning at 9:00 am at Ourso Funeral Home in Gonzales. Funeral services will begin at 11am, followed by burial in the Oak Lane Memorial Park in Prairieville, LA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Louisiana Red Cross.

Marlene, your 'other' brother--Mike 'LeBlanc' Breaux--called to give your sad news to me before I read about Tommy's passing in today's paper. I'm so sorry. On your wedding day I was 11 yrs. old and thought your groom looked so happy and very handsome in his uniform. He always seemed like such a joyful person to me. You & your family are in my prayers on this feast day of the Triumph of the Cross. I'm glad you are blessed with a faithful family to help you to carry yours. I'm sure Kimberly and Chad won't remember their babysitter on Laura Street, but I do remember them fondly. I felt so grown-up when you & Tommy trusted me to watch them while y'all attended TCHS football games in the late 70s. God bless and comfort them & their families. The slideshow is precious. Wishing you peace and good memories.

I have not seen Tommy since our days on staff together at Camp Thistlethwaite. We were both charter members and officers of the OA lodge. What a legacy of service Tommy has left for us to remember until we catch up with him when it is our turn to be reunited with our Creator through His only Son.

September 14, 2011

Joyce & family,
Jack and I are so sorry to hear about Tommy. We are in Colorado and Gina texted us his obit. You will be in our prayers throughout this tough time, but remember that God is always with you and he will always take care of you. Jack started reminising about Powell lumber and all the time spent together. We also remember all the promotional orders from Tommy's Printing while at Steamatic. Sorry that we are not able to be there.

May the peace of Our Lord be with you always.

September 14, 2011

Tommy will never really be lost to us…we will feel his presence in so many special ways...through friends he always cared about, dreams he left behind, in the joy he added to our days, words of wisdom we still carry with us, and memories that will never fade. His special love lives on....Marlene, Chad, Jason, Kimberly, and Aimee, Thank you so much for sharing Tommy with all his many friends. Many of the wonderful memories John and I have are times spent with Tommy and Marlene at YMBC, Buccaneers, and Krewe Des Amis events. The twins always wanted to go to Mr. Tommy’s ice cream shop. May it bring you special comfort to know that others care. Support, understanding and friendship are yours whenever you need them. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Tommy and I would always share a glass of spirits at the numerous sales meetings and tradeshow events we attended for our affiliation with iPROMOTEu. His jokes were always funnier to me just because of the delivery with that LA twang. I'd make him repeat half of every story due to lack of any ability on my part to hear what he was trying to convey.
He always told me I was the one with the accent and I was the one that needed to "tune yo ears" to the Lewsanna channel.
He will be sadly missed by me and many folks in our industry that had the good luck of letting Tommy bend our ears.
