Alexie Plaisance Obituary

A land manager and a resident of Golden Meadow, he died at 10:40 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at his home. He was 71, born Jan. 17, 1937, in Golden Meadow. Visiting at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, Golden Meadow, on Monday, Dec. 15, from 8 a.m. until funeral at 11 a.m. Interment in the church cemetery. Survived by his wife, Marlene I. Plaisance; six daughters, Desiree Plaisance, Gert Gallier, Lisa Trosclair, Denise Higgins, Jessica Plaisance and Stephanie Costello; two sons, Alexie IV and Richard Plaisance; 24 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, Alexis Sr. and Gertrude D. Plaisance; brothers, J. Wayne Plaisance and Kip J. Plaisance Sr.; and grandchild, Ashley Costello. He graduated from Golden Meadow High School in 1955, attended LSU from 1955-1958, and received his bachelor's degree from Nicholls State University in 1960. Alex was the owner, president and CEO of John Plaisance & Sons Inc., a wetlands management and fur-buying firm founded in the 1920s by his grandfather, John Plaisance. He was listed as Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities in 1960, Outstanding Young Men of America in 1967, and the Millennium Edition of the National Register's Who's Who in Executives and Professionals. He served in many civic and professional organizations, including the Lafourche Parish School Board from 1966-1972, chairman of the 10th Ward Advisory Committee to the Lafourche Parish Police Jury from 1966-1967, director of the Lafourche Parish chapter of the American Red Cross from 1966-1967, president of the Golden Meadow Lions Club from 1962-1963, zone chairman of Lions Club International from 1963-1964, and president of the NSU Student Government Association from 1959-1960, NSU Alumni Federation from 1960-1961, Louisiana Intracoastal Seaway Association from 1989-1991, Louisiana Land Owners Association from 1997-2000 and 2002-2003, Restore or Retreat Inc., from 2000-2006, the Millennium Port Commission from 2000-2007, as chairman of the Our Lady of Prompt Succor Finance Committee and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He had a great love and passion for our wetlands and dedicated himself to seeking restoration solutions and funding. In particular, he was one of the founders of "Restore or Retreat," an organization of individuals working on the development of the "Third Delta Channel" which would rebuild our valuable wetlands. It has been his dream and prayer that this be accomplished. Arrangements by Falgout Funeral Home, Raceland.

Dear Marlene,
My sympathy to you, Desiree and the whole family. My family and I will always remember Alex as the unique individual he was, so thoughtful, caring, intelligent and always with a ready joke. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
