Arthur Sterling Obituary

Arthur MacLean Sterling passed away peacefully at home on November 4, 2022. He was born and raised in Montana and those memories remained strong throughout his life. Art earned his undergraduate degree from Gonzaga University, where he met his loving wife, Donna. He obtained his PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. He then received a National Institute of Health Fellowship for three years of research at the University of Washington Medical School. He spent the next three years doing research at Leiden University Academic Hospital in the Netherlands where he immersed himself in the Dutch way of life. He relished the markets, flowers, biking to work, and the pleasant "gezellig" nature of the people he met who became lifelong friends. This experience remained one of the highlights of his life. He returned to the United States in 1975 where he had a 28-year tenure as a member of the LSU Chemical Engineering faculty. He also served as Associate Dean of Engineering and was Chair of the Chemical Engineering Department. Art filled his life with people and things he loved. He was passionate about education, travel, and sharing good food with family and friends. His work and interests took him around the globe, and he never stopped learning and trying new things. He was an avid photographer, reader, and master of the latest technology. He enjoyed playing tennis with the many friends he made over the years at the Aquatic Club and Bocage Racquet Club in Baton Rouge. Art had an encyclopedic mind that had an entire section dedicated to things that would make others smile. It didn't matter what the subject was, he would have a joke or a story to suit the moment. Art made everyone laugh, even in the toughest times. Art remembered every meal and every recipe he ever tried. His kitchen was his laboratory and the place where he generously shared his love, as anyone who was lucky enough to eat at his table could attest. Dr. Arthur Sterling was preceded in death by his parents, George and June Sterling of Ronan Montana, and his sister Sandra Wilson of Spokane, Washington. His survivors include his beloved wife of sixty-one years, Donna Sterling; his son Patrick (Ellen) of Louisville, KY; his daughter Michelle (Craig) of Paradise Valley, AZ; his daughter Kari (David) of Minneapolis, MN, and his son Jeroen (Kim) of Portland, OR; his grandchildren Victoria (Albert "Buddy") Henricks, Natalie (John Michael) Griffith, Grace Sterling, Benjamin Brauer, Ella Brauer; his great-grandchildren Michael, Chase and Cecile Henricks, and the newest arrival, born on the same day as his passing, Anna Griffith. We like to imagine the joy they felt, winking at each other while celebrating the circle of life. We will be raising our hearts and glasses to him in a celebration of life that will take place at Bocage Racquet Club on November 16th from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. Art will be laid to rest in Montana alongside his parents in early summer.

What an inspiration to all of us on FB who knew him. His zest for life, passion for cooking and love for his family was ever present in his posts on our cooking page on FB. He inspired me and so many others. Wishing family and friends of his comfort and peace in his legacy. Truly a talented man. He will be dearly missed.

Arthur was such a huge part of our FB group, What's Cooking. He was our `storyteller´. With every post and photo, he told a story, often connected to his family and his cherished wife. Always kind words for others and always a source of knowledge and support. He was a bedrock of our group, and we doubt there will ever be another storyteller quite like him. We are so grateful for the years he contributed to our group. He will be so very missed.

Dear Family,
In my high school time I met the Sterlings. It was a loving home ,where everybody was always welcome. Needless to say that they made a lot of people very sad when they went back to the states.
6 Years ago I went to visit Art and Donna in Baton Rouge. It was as if there was no time gap of 50 years. Art was still the down to earth man.
If there would be more people like Art and Donna the world would look much better.

Ik wens de familie en vooral Donna zijn grote liefde veel sterkte toe met dit zware verlies.
Heel veel liefs

I, too, worked for the College of Engineering when Dr. Sterling was Associate Dean. I missed the times of those infamous Xmas party skits but it was a joy to work with Dr. Sterling. He was always upbeat, kind, had a great sense of humor, and was helpful to all staff. He definitely was part of the great environment in the College and working with him was a gift to me and for many. To his family, I know he will be missed. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I pray that you can celebrate those good times, love the stories and memories, and that you find some solace in such even while grieving.

I worked with Dr. Sterling when he was Associate Dean in the College of Engineering. What a great boss, always upbeat and caring with his staff! My favorite memories: whenever we would all go out to lunch and he would see the menu, he'd say "Soup du jour - it must be good, they have it every day!" And those XMAS party skits.....RIP Dr. Art

My heart goes out to your family. I am a former coworker of Michelle's. No matter how long you have a loved one in your life, there is a deep hole when they are gone.

My late parents Joe and Anne Polack were how I was lucky to know . They went back decades as colleagues LSU Chem Eng and as very good friends. They loved being treated to his culinary talents. I had an active delightful connection to Art on FB, as I no longer live in the US. Nonetheless I felt very close to him and will miss him greatly. My condolences to his wonderful loving family. He was a truly happy person.
