Byron Casey Obituary

Casey Jr., Dr. Byron Joseph Dr. Byron Joseph Casey Jr. passed away on Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, at the age of 87. Dr. Casey was a graduate of Jesuit High School, Loyola University and LSU Medical School. He then served as a medical officer upon the USS Calhoun in the South Pacific during World War II at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After his ship sank at Okinawa, he received a citation for outstanding professional ability and dedication to duty. After his discharge at the end of the war, Dr. Casey trained at the Lahey Clinic in Boston in anesthesiology. In 1949, he moved back to New Orleans, where he became a member of the staff at Baptist Hospital and ascended to the position of chairman of anesthesiology at Southern Baptist Hospital and practiced until his retirement in 1988. Dr. Casey is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dolores Herbert Casey; seven children and their spouses, Michael P. Casey and wife Diana, Patrick H. Casey, M.D., and wife Peggy, Byron J. Casey III and wife Kay, Glenn A. Casey, M.D., and wife Eileen, Kathy Hoard, Karen C. Francioni and husband Larry Francioni III, and Maureen C. Honigman; 23 grandchildren, Brett, Brad, Colleen, Michael, Kiernan, Meghan, Sean, Kelly, Byron IV, Jeffrey, Colin, Blair, Mairin, Scott, Lauren, Christopher, Kimberly, Larry IV, Timothy, Craig, Casey, Erin and Paul; six great-grandchildren, Kaitlin, Miles, Nicholas, Ava, Liam and Aiden; brother, Jerry P. Casey, M.D.; and sister, Bonnie Stuart. He will be greatly missed and is forever loved. Relatives and friends are invited to the Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 6666 Spanish Fort Blvd., New Orleans, LA. Interment in Lake Lawn Park. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jesuit High School, 4133 Banks St., New Orleans, LA 70119. Dr. Casey was a friend to my parents for years. He always made time to visit them in the hospital when they were ill. I know you will miss him terribly, but I know that my Father, Al Pavy, is happy he is joining him in heaven. They can play a few more rounds of golf together.
