Danny Dean Obituary

Dean, Danny Martin Danny Martin Dean died of a heart attack on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, at his home. He was 43 and a native and resident of Baton Rouge. He was the former general manager of WBRH and KBRH. During his tenure as manager, he formatted the FM station to smooth jazz and was responsible for putting many popular shows on the air, such as "Tabby's Blues Box," "Crescent City Sounds" and "John Fred's the Roots of Rock and Roll." In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his father, Harold Bruce Dean; friend and mentor, John Dobbs; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Norris Dean. Peggy,

The saddest of days is when you learn your hero has passed away. Danny was a hero not only to Leah and Jack, but to so many youngsters who passed through the doors of WBRH. He was the reason that I made a career out of radio and for that I am very grateful. But, I am even more grateful for having Danny as a mentor while I was at WBRH. His knowledge, dedication and commitment to excellence were only overshadowed by his passion for radio and family. Plus, he told some of the most hilarious stories! "But it wasn't a peach. It was a human head!" comes to mind.

I now teach radio to students at Southeastern. I can only hope that one day they will think of me as highly as I've thought of Danny.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your children.

May God's love bring you solace today and a blessed future.

Dear Peggy,

My heart is hurting with you and Leah and Jack. Danny was a fierce and faithful friend, whose ability to listen and encourage made a significant impact on my life in the mid-1980's.

I moved away from BR in 1991, and the last time I saw y'all was at my wedding in 1994, but within the past year he did track me down and we talked about our friendship and God's blessings in our lives since then. I am SO thankful we got to have that conversation. What an incredible gift.

I just wanted y'all to know what a great friend he was to me. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Peg,

I just heard about Danny. Words won't do much I know, but Danny was one of my favorite conversationalists. It saddens me that we did not get to spend more time together. Leah is and always will be one of Mary Hannah's all time great friends. You are all in our prayers.

Dear Friends,

Thank you so much for the kind words and memories of Danny. Leah and Jack were the light of Danny's life so these will help them remember their father and happy times when we were together as a family. Although we miss Danny dearly, we know that he is in a better place where he is finally pain free. Peggy Dean

Dear Peggy,

I am saddened and shocked to hear of Danny's passing. Just three days ago I received an e-mail from him trying to catch up from the old days. I worked with Danny at the station after I graduated BRHS when he took over after John Dobbs.

When I first met him, he was the guy who worked the Sunday Christian rock show. Not just a regular three hour shift like the rest of us mind you, the WHOLE Sunday. I thought at the time, wow. What dedication.

His commitment to the station was something I have always admired and my reply e-mail to him was an inquiry into how I might follow in his footsteps. I am so sorry I will never get his feedback. He was truly someone I could respect.

I wish you the best future for you and your children and hope that you might find some comfort in reading the heartfelt sentiments that your husband endeared in his fellow man.

Regards,

Ann Day

Peggy and family,

I am so sorry for your loss and pray that the Lord will grant you many tender mercies amid your grief.

I remember Danny as the go-getter sophomore at WBRH when I was a senior working at the station. I also recall his reputation as the staff "Jesus freak," a status he obtained (in his true driven fashion) years before some others of us.

I reckon about the best any of us can hope for when we've breathed our last is that our time on earth mattered to someone . . . that we'd made some difference in the world and somehow had been Christ to someone in need of His love.

I think Danny's obvious passion for, and dedication to, WBRH/KBRH and his students is a model of how we're meant to go about our lives "in the world," and the impact you can have in the process.

I'm grateful I was able to touch base with Danny again a few years ago when, listening to the KBRH webcast, I heard him doing a live tribute program after George Harrison's death. I picked up the phone, and we spent a delightful hour or so reminiscing about BRHS and John Dobbs, solving all the problems of radio and comparing notes on cantankerous automation software.

And if WBRH alumni ever do get around to having that reunion Danny was thinking about putting together back then, it will be missing the guy who loved that little station more than any of us.

May God bless you all.

Peggy and family,

I am so sorry to hear about Danny's passing. He truly was a man who loved what he did and did what he loved, from the time I first met him in the late 1970s. I was the first student station manager at WBRH; after John Dobbs' retirement I was delighted to see the station put in the hands of someone as talented and caring as Danny. WBRH, and Danny, gave students many skills still in use today, regardless of whether they're in radio.

Compassion for those less-skilled than others, patience with those still learning and love for the craft -- that's how I'll remember him.

Danny and your whole family have been in our prayers since we heard the sudden sad news. We were just talking after Mass in the coffee shop. Please let me know if there is anything Richard and I can do for you and your family. Elizabeth wanted Jack to know that she is praying for him too. I wanted to apologize for not being able to attend the funeral today. I was out yesterday attending my Aunt's funeral in New Orleans and didn't receive the funeral details until 3:30 today. I went to high school with Danny and we were good friends for many years. He was DJ at our wedding.I just received e-mail from him a few days ago about planning a 25 year reunion. I was shocked to see his obituary as I was looking on-line to see my mother's obituary- she died a few weeks ago at our home here in Washington. Our deepest sympathy to your family, Danny was such a wonderful guy and once he was your friend he was always your friend.

I will never forget Danny's laugh. Radio class was the highlight of my day. Danny came in to the radio program as teacher at midyear in 1988; I was one of the few freshmen that pursued radio and he helped cultivate me into a more responsible man. My heart goes out to his family and also to the students who never got to experience radio class with Danny Dean. He made high school worth going to.

Dear Peggy and kids,

I went through the radio program at BRH and worked at WBRH/KBRH in the early 90s. Mr. Dean, as we knew him, was a great teacher and a good man. He really challenged us to excel academically and to develop professional-level skills -though he made it clear that he was available to discuss anything that might be on our minds. Many of us came to see him both as a friend and fellow radio-broadcasting enthusiast as well an educator and mentor.

A few years ago, a friend and I went back to visit Danny at the station. We had a great conversation with him about all kind of things, really. It was a memorable visit not for anything in particular that was said but because it was good to see an old friend happy and doing well.

This sad news came completely out of the blue. As much as it jolted me, well, I can only imagine.

You have my most sincere condolences and my best wishes for you and your children.

Danny gave me and many other radio students a work ethic and public speaking skills that we still carry to this day. WBRH was my first job. Moreover, I wouldn't have an appreciation for such diverse music as I do without having taken part in the BRHS radio program under his direction. His program may have been difficult, but it contributed significantly in turning so many high school students into the professionals they are today. He will be very missed, but his contributions to our lives will continue to live within us.

Danny leaves a legacy of friendship to many, and over a decade of mentorship to his former students at Baton Rouge High/WBRH during the 1990's.
