Dr. Hans Armstrong Obituary

Dr. Hans Paulsen Armstrong, aged 91, entered the Kingdom of Heaven on December 28, 2023, where he was happily reunited with his loving wife of 61 years, Margaret Earhart Armstrong (Margie), who preceded him there. A native of Baton Rouge, he graduated from University High School where he excelled in sports, serving as the starting quarterback and punter for the football team and catcher for the baseball team. He then attended LSU and was a proud Deke. Upon graduating from LSU Medical School in New Orleans, he completed a pediatric surgery residency at Pittsburgh Children's Hospital. He then moved back to Baton Rouge where he spent his life caring for the community's ailing children. His illustrious career earned him respect and high regard from the entire medical community. He was a steadfast father to eight children -six boys and two girls -in whom he instilled character and integrity. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He served proudly in the US Army and was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was also very involved in his church, Trinity Episcopal, where he served on the vestry and volunteered in numerous capacities. He is survived by his children Dr. Tim (Judy) Armstrong, Dr. Kevin (Lisa) Armstrong, Kyle (Karen) Armstrong, Dr. Karlan (Erika) Armstrong, Keith (Mary Beth) Armstrong, Dr. Paul (Beckie) Armstrong, Katherine (Keith) Brown, Elizabeth (Ted) Fabian; grandchildren Katelyn, Thomas, Kristen, Ashley, Brooke, Brian, Adam, Mandy, Ryan, Anna, Reid, Spencer, Jordan, Christian, William, Elizabeth, Hayes, Claire, Parker, Avery, Emily, and Ashley; and 8 great-grandchildren Margaret (Maggie), David Michael, Cooper, Emma Grace, Adaline, Jameson, Keller, and Davis. He was preceded in death by his grandsons Alexander Paulsen Armstrong and David Nielsen Armstrong and his sister Anna Marie Hall. Paulsen was many things to many people: to his patients and their families, a ray of hope; to his children, a firm foundation; to his wife, a lifelong partner. His passing, while making Heaven a bit brighter, has left our world slightly dimmer. Visitation will be at Trinity Episcopal Church, 3552 Morning Glory Avenue, at 1:30 PM on January 13, 2024 with a service to follow at 3 PM. A private burial will take place after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his honor to the Dr. H. Paulsen and Margie Armstrong Endowment Fund at Trinity Episcopal Church of Baton Rouge

I had the pleasure of working with him in the OR at OLOL in the 1970s. He was such a gentleman and always the best to work with! I was a new graduate of OLOL nursing school and he was extremely patient and a great teacher/mentor for all of us new nurses. I actually have a small scar on my arm where he removed an odd looking thing I had there. I always think of him and smile when I notice my scar...he was the best!!! He always told us stories of his children and how Margie was a wonderful mom/nurse. We were all thrilled when she finally came to work with him in surgery. We all fought to circulate or scrub on their cases. They were a great team and heaven has to be a brighter place with them both there. I can hear the sound of his wonderful laugh in my head as I write this. The Armstrong family is in my prayers.

Paulsen was one of the nicest, most impressive men I've met since moving here. He had a kind and humble dignity about him that is earned from a life well lived. We were all blessed to know this fine man. I'm sorry for your loss.

At the end of February, 1971, in Baton Rouge, at 2 a.m., Dr. Armstrong performed surgery on our 1 month old son and saved his life!! We are forever grateful!! Both red heads. :)
