Ethel Slaughter Obituary

Elinor Williams Slaughter passed away peacefully at her home in Baker, LA on Sunday, August 9, 2015 at the age of 98. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Ethel Williams; a sister, Dorothy Stahl; and her cherished husband of 70 years Gilbert Mills Slaughter, Sr. She is survived by her two sons, Gilbert M. Slaughter, Jr. and wife, Theresa Holten Slaughter; and Thomas W. Slaughter, Sr. and wife Trudy Millet Slaughter; grandchildren, Kathryn Holten Slaughter, Mills Holten Slaughter, Thomas W. Slaughter, Jr. and wife, Mindy Ashmore Slaughter and Tonya Slaughter Bailey and husband, Nicholas Bailey; great grandchildren, Lily and Owen Bailey; and step great grandchildren, Katelynn Haydel, Hannah Nix and Jackson Shankle. In all of her 98 years she had two beliefs. First was the Bible saying "You can do all things through Christ that strengthens me" and He has never let me down-through good times and bad. He was always there. Second was the belief that if something could be done or made, she would try it even if it turned out not as good. She attended LSU and graduated from Baton Rouge Business School. She traveled with her husband, Gilbert while he was still in the States during WWII and then lived with his parents and hers while he was overseas for 19 months. Mills, their oldest son, had been in 13 states before he was 6 months old; he was a trooper. She had two wonderful sons and two grandsons that also served in the military. During their 70 years of marriage they had traveled to or through every state in the United States. What an accomplishment. Visitation at Zachary Community Church on Wednesday, August 12, 2015, from 9:30am until funeral service at 11:00 am. Interment will be at Young Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Parrish Foote, Bill Gaines, Thomas W. Slaughter, Sr., Thomas W. Slaughter, Jr., Nicholas Bailey and Mansel Slaughter, Jr.. The family would love to express thanks to Clarity Hospice for their special care and Home Instead who provided caregivers Chiquita Kelly and Tiffany Porter. They were two special ladies who provided peace and comport to Elinor and the family during her time of convalescence. And last and most of all a special thank you to Gracie Bell who worked for Elinor for over 10 years. Gracie was considered family and she was loved by Elinor and all the family. It was our pleasure to experience Elinor's wonderful hospitality and friendship. Both Elinor and Gil will be missed. Being friends with my parents for over 50 years since the days of the WW2 glider program and into the years of reunions with them at their Baker home and sharing her great cooking and their vast experiences of traveling the USA and Canada in an attempt to socialize with many former glider pilots, no one did it better than the Slaughters. Rest now in the arms of the Lord.
