Jimmy Bain, Sr. Obituary

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7). Reverend Jim Bain, Sr. was surrounded by family as God sent his angel to escort him home June 14, 2017. He was born on September 3, 1934, in Pell City, AL. He was a graduate from Mississippi State where he played football and was known as The Passing Parson. He received a Master of Divinity degree from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He retired as pastor of Istrouma Baptist Church, Baton Rouge, LA in 1997, where he remained Pastor Emeritus. He touched the lives of many through his ministry. His favorite scripture was "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me" (Phil 4:13)". He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty Bain; children, Randy and Lecia Bain, Pete and Keippi Bain, Angel Bain and Donna Fazio; grandchildren, Amanda Bain, Destin Hooks, Ryan Bain, Haley and Michael Mobley, Austin Bain and Brett Bain; siblings, Bob and Margaret Bain, Betty Singleton, Helen and Bill Scott. He is preceded in death by his mother, Floretta Bain; father, Laney Bain; brother, Bill Bain; brothers-in-law, Bill Purdy and Bill Singleton. "Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him." (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14) Visitation will be held at Istrouma Baptist Church, 10500 Sam Rushing Dr., Baton Rouge, LA, on Friday, June 16, 2017, from 4:00PM until 8:00PM. Visitation will resume at Istrouma Baptist Church on Saturday, June 17, 2017, from 9:00AM until funeral services at 11:00AM. Dr. Randy Bain, Dr. Jeff Ginn, Rev. Ron Lambe and Ryan Bain will be officiating the service. Burial will immediately follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Ryan Bain, Destin Hooks, Austin Bain, Brett Bain, Michael Mobley, Eric Lane, Gordon Rogillio and Chris May. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staffs of Regency Place Rehab Center and The Butterfly Wing at the Baton Rouge General Mid-City. In lieu of flowers, it would be his desire that contributions be made in Jim's name to the "Vision 2020" fund at Istrouma Baptist Church, which he loved dearly for the purpose of spreading the gospel to which he devoted his life. Family and friends may sign the online guestbook or leave a personal note for the family at www.greenoaksfunerals.com.

Miss Betty I remember when Mother died that you and Bro. Jim stopped by at her visitation. It meant so much. I have not been well and it isn't. wise for me to go out for an extended period. I have what I call my Istrouma Bible which I used. when Bro. Jim preached and outlined his sermons. I will laminate his obituary and keep it in that Bible. Bro. Jim and Ms. Betty were like second parents to me growing up and I've always loved them so very much. To know Bro. Jim was to know a man who faithfully served the Lord and his family every single day of his life. What a wonderful legacy of faith and love he's left for his precious family, friends, Istrouma and for everyone who's been blessed to know him.

I'm so thankful for the many wonderful memories I have of Bro. Jim and I'll treasure them the rest of my life. While it's still hard to realize he's gone, I'm rejoicing because I know he's exactly where he wants to be, with JESUS and a heavenly host of angels. I'm looking forward to the day I see Bro. Jim again. I can imagine him running to welcome us all to heaven with a big bear hug, broad smile and a twinkle in his eye before he shouts, "WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG??? Come on, let's go see JESUS!!!"

He had such a powerful presence and at the same time was a gentle giant.
I remember when he baptized me. I was waiting at the top of the stairs for his signal to walk down into the water and I'll never forget the way his black robe was swirling around and floating on the water. Then I remember giggling to myself because I realized he was wearing his big ole hunting waders underneath! After he baptized me he just pulled them off and put his suit coat back on and went on to give his sermon without missing a beat.
He was a great man.

My sweet friend. Preacher as I called him was so precious to Oliver and me He prayed with us so many times, encouraged me in my 12 years of being singles director and loved us unconditionally. He was so proud of Oliver's love of his fifth graders. He would call and talk with Oliver when they were both so ill Our saying to each other for many years was "to keep on keeping on!" And he and Oliver did until the Lord brought them home . They both have to be rejoicing right now! I will have to keep on keeping on until I join them. God bless you Betty and your wonderful family I love so much.
