Michael Cross Obituary

"Everyday's a good day; some are just better than others." A devoted husband, father, brother, and friend, Mike passed away at his home on Monday, November 18, 2013. He was 69, a lifelong resident of Baker, and a self-employed governmental relations consultant. Visiting at Baker Funeral Home, 6401 Groom Road, Baker, on Wednesday, November 20, from 5:00-8:00pm. Visiting at the Prayer Chapel of Bethany Church, 13855 Plank Road, Baker, on Thursday, November 21, from 1:00pm until memorial service at 2:00pm, conducted by Rev. Larry Stockstill. Private inurnment will be at a later date. Survived by wife, Kristie Pospisil Cross; two daughters, Lauren and Christen Cross; four sons, Shane and wife Colleen Cross, and Lance, Ryan, and Matthew Cross; two sisters, Patricia Cross, and Lori and husband Jim Martinez; two grandsons, Greg and Hunter Cross; brother-in-law, Brad Pospisil; and four nephews, Sean Smallen, and Braden, McKenzie, and Reese Pospisil. Preceded in death by his parents, Margie M. and Aduron B. Cross; nephew, Jason Smallen; and mother-in-law, JoAnn Mahfouz of Alexandria. Mike graduated from Baker High School, and attended USL. He was a member of the Baker City Council from 1972-1976. He served as Mayor of Baker from 1976 until 1981, when he was elected to the Louisiana State Senate, where he served until 1996. He was the youngest city council member and mayor elected in the state at that time. Mike's love for people and his desire to help others is what led him to seek public office, and he continued to serve others long after. "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace." Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. The family would like to extend sincere gratitude to St. Joseph Hospice for their support. I'm so sorry Kristie. I really loved him and I cherished all of my memories of him. If I had known he was sick, I would have come immediately to see him. I wish I could have held his hand and heard his wonderful laugh one more time. Tonight, he soars with the angels and kisses the face of God. May he have peace forever.

Mike will always be Mayor Mike in my mind. My family moved next door to Mike's Mom and Sister in 1976 and Mayor Mike was larger than life to me as a kid. I am so sad to hear of his passing and will always hold his memory in highest regards.

I remember Mike from high school as a good friend to me, and to all. He was someone who would radiate warmth wherever he went with his famous, trademark smile and genuine love for others. I hadn't seen Mike since high school, and it's just unbelievably sad to see his picture here now. My family and I send our love, prayers and condolences to his family...as well as the rest of us who've lost one of the very special ones....

Mike was a good friend, neighbor and Gentleman. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. His valued, engaging, advise was well known on our street.
Mike could easily summarize the woes of our country in a few long minutes.
His belief in Christ Jesus was steadfast.
I could go on and on as he and I would occasionally do in my front yard, lawnmower and car running.
I'll miss you my friend!
