Robert Gregory Claitor Sr.

A well known entrepreneur and lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, Robert Gregory Claitor, Sr. died on Tuesday, May 30, 2017. Bob was born to Otto and Mable Claitor on September 20, 1926. He graduated from Catholic High School in 1943 and in 1948 he graduated from the U.S Naval Academy, Annapolis Maryland with the rank of Ensign. While enrolled at the Academy his athletic ability and notable height earned him membership on several teams including the U. S. Naval basket ball and water polo. On those teams he enjoyed membership in the New York Athletic Club. His active duty service during the Korean Conflict earned him the rank of Lt. Junior Grade. When returning to Baton Rouge, he joined his parents in operation of the family owned business, Claitor's Bookstore. Under his management, the business expanded to include legal publishing and reprints of U. S. Government documents. In 1968 he ventured into commercial real estate with the development of Acadian-Perkins Plaza and in 1984 his interest in boating and water sports led him to develop Marina del Ray in Madisonville. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge, the Baton Rouge Area Chamber of Commerce, and St. Aloysius Church. He is survived by his sons and their wives James Dean and Sarah, Robert Gregory Jr. and Monique, Daniel Albert and Sharmaine, and Jon Fleming and Molly. Other survivors include grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Nancy Mc Lellan Claitor, and his siblings James Daniel Claitor, Jewel Claitor Ogorzaly, and Elizabeth Claitor Blagg. Visitation at St. Aloysius Church is scheduled for Saturday, June 3 from 10:00 until Mass of Christian burial at 11:30. Interment will follow in the Claitor plot at Magnolia Cemetery. His grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Will Cole and Clint Peters. Bob was an Eagle Scout and the family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Boy Scouts of America Istrouma Area Council.
