Robert Scheffy Obituary

A native of Bethlehem, Pa., and a longtime resident of Baton Rouge, he passed away Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, at St. James Place at age 89. He attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., and retired from Exxon after 40 years of service. Mr. Scheffy is survived by his wife of 64 years, June Heroman Scheffy; four sons, Robert W. Scheffy Jr. and wife Patricia McCarty Scheffy, and William W. Scheffy, all of Baton Rouge, Lee C. Scheffy and wife, Lucy Oliver Scheffy, of Dallas, and James H. Scheffy, of Houston; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Mary Robinson Scheffy. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., on Sunday, Feb. 27, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 445 Marquette Ave., on Monday, Feb. 28, from 9 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by the Rev. Victor Messina. Interment in Roselawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Lee C. Scheffy Jr., Scott D. Scheffy, Robert W. Scheffy III, William Austin Scheffy, Brett L. Henry, Daniel W. Carlin and Eric E. Roberts. Honorary pallbearer is Jerry W. Affolter Jr. Special thanks to all the caregivers at St. James Place and Hospice of Baton Rouge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul, P.O. Box 127, Baton Rouge, LA 70821-0127.

I am a recent acquaintance of Mr. Scheffy, and what a delight it was to be in his company. My Mother lives at Saint James Place, and I am often there in the evenings to assist her with supper. Thus, I have gotten to know several of the residents who sit nearby at mealtime. Mr. Scheffy was an entertaining presence, with his quick wit and playful sense of humor. I have already missed his presence at the dinner table these last few weeks, and will always remember him with a smile. He used to tell me that I reminded him of his niece, Lucy . . .
