Sybil Rhodes Obituary

Sybil Templet Rhodes passed away peacefully on September 23, 2023 at the age of 78. Sybil was a graduate of Port Allen High School, where she met her husband, John Brent Rhodes, Sr. She graduated from LSU with a Master's in Education and Exercise Physiology. She then taught at Broadmoor High School until the birth of her first child, and after that spent many years coaching volleyball and basketball, having especially loved coaching her children. Tennis was an integral part of Sybil's life. She spent most of her time on the tennis court at Bocage Racquet Club, and it was not uncommon to find here playing a match just after completing chemotherapy. She is survived by her three children, Paige Giavotella (Jeff), Courtney McGraw (David), and Dr. John Brent Rhodes Jr. (Brooke); her grandchildren, Brenton Buckles, Emmeline, John Brent, Catherine, and Philip Rhodes; step-grandchildren, Brandon, Ty, and Tess McGraw. She is also survived by her siblings, Paul Templet (Jami) and Donna Conrad and many special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Brent Rhodes Sr.; and her parents Viola and Sebastian Templet. Visitation will be held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home on Government Street, Wednesday, September 27, 2023 from 5pm until 8pm. Visitation will resume Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 9am until a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am at St. Joseph Cathedral. The celebrant will be the Very Reverend Paul D. Counce. Her nephew, Deacon J. Brian Bergeron will deliver the Homily. The pallbearers will be her treasured nephews. Burial will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. The family requests everyone wear color, as Sybil would have wanted to celebrate her life.

I did not find out about this until just recently. I am so sorry. We were at LSU together and we sang together in River Road Ramblers. My husband took care of her cat and thought she was so friendly and funny. We´ll miss her.

Sweet Sybil was an inspiration to me. She always brought a smile to my face. She was wkg out at woman´s fitness, no matter what treatments she was dealing with.
She was always chatting with everyone as she worked out and rarely complained about anything!
I will miss her so much!
God bless to all her family.

I have fond memories of Sybil. She was my PE teacher at Broadmoor. Despite her youth, she never had any difficulties managing a group of teenage girls who really didn´t like to sweat. As an adult I frequently ran into sybil. Never one for self-pity, she always had a smile and viewed her cancer as an irritant. What an inspiration. She will be missed by many.

I was very privileged to know Sybil for at least 20 plus years on the tennis courts with the game that she loved and was very passionate about. It became not only a game of sport but of salvation for many of us and grew into lasting friendships and really more like a sisterhood.

I will always remember Sybil´s smile because she always had one! She was an avid tennis player and an amazing woman who became an inspiration to all that knew her. You will never be forgotten Sybil... rest in peace my friend.

Courtney, Paige, Brent and family,
What an incredible mother you all had! She loved each of you and your families dearly! The world was a much better place with Sybil in it! She was a friend to all! We were in Shreveport at a State Tournament when we received the news of her passing. People from all over the state shared their love for Sybil and their condolences. She certainly leaves a legacy in the hearts and lives of those who were fortunate to call her friend! May each of you know how much you will be thought if in the days ahead. May God give you strength and comfort and may the many wonderful memories that you have of her bring a smile to your heart! With loving sympathy.....

Sybil said she hated bridge but she enjoyed playing in our group forever & always made us laugh. She had a green thumb & could nurse any plant back to health. Her house was entirely decorated at Halloween & Christmas & we loved it. I guess we all just loved Sybil!

Sybil was a very classy lady. I was blessed to know her through tennis for over 25 years. She always had a smile on her face and never complained with everything she was going through. She will be missed. Love you Sybil

When my wife and I moved next door to Sybil, immediately she welcomed us and we became close like we'd been friends for years. She'd join us for crawfish boils and get togethers and always made us feel like family. I will always cherish the memory of her and I going to the civic association meeting and making each other crack up and laugh aloud (my wife threatened to separate Sybil and I). The last time we spent time with her, she was making our baby smile and laugh, it was such a sweet memory and we're so grateful we have it. She was young at heart, and will be missed sorely. Our deepest condolences to her family.

My heart is heavy at the loss of a dear and treasured friend. I have such good memories of our time spent together, especially on Grand Isle. You are with Brent again, how wonderful. And perhaps with my Jimmy also. Have a good time together. May the angels lead you to paradise. Rest In Peace my sweet friend. With love, Mary Catherine

Thinking of you all. My heart goes out to you in your loss. For me remembering the happy and fun things helped me through. Doesn´t change the loss but know those memories get you through the rough spots. Sybil told me to go back to living and get and eye lift after my husband died. She is so right, that is what we all have to do after loss. Go on living and only get eye lift if needed. Prayers are with you all
