Walford Harrell Obituary

Harrell, Walford L. Walford L. Harrell was born in Pulaski, Va., to the late James Harrison and Mackie M. Black Harrell, on Feb. 8, 1922. He died Sunday, May 28, 2006, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was 84 and a retired rental manager with J.C. Long Co. He was a 30-year veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Air Force with the rank of master sergeant as a flight engineer. He was a German prisoner of war for one year and was awarded numerous medals, including the Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a member of the Red Stick Chapter of POWs. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Donia Marie Maggio Harrell; two grandchildren, Shayne Harrell of Smyrna, Tenn., and Angelina Cates of Columbia, Tenn.; three great-grandchildren, Mikaylah and Garrett James Harrell and Peyton Cates, all of Tennessee; sister, Juanita Bailey, Pulaski; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Teenie and Calvin Bajon of Baton Rouge, and Ann and Henry Cherry of Robertsdale, Ala.; sisters-in-law, Toni Maggio, Baton Rouge, and Jennie Maggio, Arlington, Va.; brother-in-law, Joe Burch, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by a son, James L. Harrell; sisters, Beulah Vinson, Polly Henson, Doris Shull, Colleen Byerly and Ruby Burch; brother, Ray Harrell; and brothers-in-law, Anthony S. and Ross Maggio, Woodson Vinson, Ralph Henson, Brownie Shull and Grant Bailey. Visiting at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, with recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m., led by the Rev. Jeff Bayhi. Graveside service at Carolina Memorial Cemetery, Charleston, S.C., at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 1.
