Walter Melancon Obituary

He was a retired mechanical laborer at Novartis Chemical Plant in St. Gabriel. During his earlier years, Walter was also a karate instructor with centers in the White Castle and Plaquemine areas before retiring. Sadly, he departed from his family and friends Monday, March, 1, 2010, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was 61. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 39 years, Virginia Flowers Melancon; a devoted father to four daughters, Florida Melancon, Wanda Melancon Reneau, of White Castle, Mary C. Melancon Burks, of Plaquemine, and Calice Babin, of Donaldsonville; three sons, Walter Melancon Jr., of White Castle, Alfred J. Melancon, of Darrow, and the late Matthew Street Jr. He was the devoted son of the late Leon Melancon Sr. and Mary C. Melancon and Henry Dorsey Sr. Walter was a devoted brother to Mary C. Melancon and Henry Dorsey Sr., Josie Dorsey Johnson, Clara Dorsey Anthony, Nandra Dorsey, Mary Dorsey and Deloris Dorsey, all of Baton Rouge, and the late Vera Melancon, who was of Baton Rouge; two brothers, Henry Dorsey Jr. and Joseph Dorsey. Walter was the son of the late Leon Melancon and Mary C. Melancon, and was reared by the late Henry Dorsey Sr. He also leaves to mourn his passing siblings of the late Leon Melancon Sr., Leon Melancon Jr., Larry Melancon, Louis Melancon, Elijah Melancon, Leroy Melancon, David Melancon, Sterling Melancon, Mary Melancon, Margie Melancon, Ruby Melancon, Barbbra Melancon, Lorenza Melancon, Doris Melancon and Shirley Melancon, who reside in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Marrero and Califronia. He was also a devoted grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many. Special thanks to his former co-workers at the Novartis plant (formerly Ciba-Geigy), Marvin Burks and James Riley, both of White Castle, Troy Louchette, John Pouchet, employees of Home Health Solutions, his physical therapists, Mrs. Dawn Martin, Mr. Raymond and Mrs. Pamels Netter, a daughter-in-law, Shanta Fowler Melancon, of Darrow, son-in-law, Marvin Burks, of White Castle, and brothers-in-law, David Johnson Sr. and Isiah Anthony. Services will be held at Progressive Baptist Church in White Castle on Saturday, March 6, at 11 a.m. Interment in St. John Cemetery. Roscoe Mortuary of Plaquemine is in charge of arrangements.
