In loving memory of Chris, an extraordinary birder, a dedicated army officer, and a wonderful friend. Chris's remarkable journey as a birder touched the hearts of many, and his unwavering belief in the existence of the elusive Ivory-billed Woodpecker inspired us all. With over 823 species of North American birds gracing his life list, Chris's love for avian wonders knew no bounds. From the vibrant hummingbirds to the majestic raptors, he reveled in the beauty of every feathered creature. His keen eyes and attentive ears were finely attuned to the melodies of nature, capturing moments of pure joy in the flutter of wings and the call of distant birdsong.
I first met Chris while photographing a migrating Blue-winged Warbler along the Augusta canal in the fall of 2013. We struck up a friendly conversation and developed a strong friendship that spanned a decade, while birding together over most of North America. Initially, Chris convinced me to join him for a week of birding with Yupik Eskimos in Gambell, Alaska, a mere 45 miles from Russia. Armed with our binoculars and cameras, Chris and I embarked on many subsequent missions chasing rare birds in Florida, Texas, Arizona, California, Alaska, Canada and onboard boats on both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Our life lists grew as we added the Amazon Kingfisher, Mistle Thrush, White-faced Storm Petrel, Antillean Palm Swift, Black Hawk, Common Cuckoo, Green-breasted Mango, Himalayan Snowcock and many others. These feathered creatures, with their grace and beauty, reminds me of the delicate interconnectedness of all living beings, and the importance of preserving their habitats for generations to come.
In the end, my pursuit of birds with Chris taught me more than just the art of birdwatching. It taught me patience, perseverance, and a deep reverence for the natural world. Though Chris may have left this world, his love for birds and his unwavering spirit will forever live in my memory. May his soul find solace among the treetops, soaring alongside the birds he adored. Rest in peace, dear friend. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

He loved running the boneyards at Gambell flushing all those rare birds. He will be missed by his Bird Family.
