Grace Smits Obituary
Grace Smits, born Geeske Koopman, passed away on October 6, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on March 7, 1936, in the charming town of Sint Nicolaasga, Friesland, in the Netherlands, Grace was the beloved eldest daughter of Nanne Ulbe Koopman and Eke Van Der Schuit. She was a cherished sister to Gepke, Wietze, and Anna, a devoted wife to her husband Dirk Smits for 58 ½ years, a loving mother to Joanna, Nancy and her husband Clark Hermann, Derrick and his wife Hannah, and an adoring Oma to Charles, Jon and wife Caroline, Ben, Grayson, Sophia, Nancy, and Derrick Abraham. She also took immense pride in her role as a great-grandmother to Hudson and Jon Thomas Hermann.
Grace's early years were framed by the turbulent times of World War II, a period she often recounted with vivid memories and stories of her childhood resilience. As a young girl, she experienced the war's trials firsthand, recalling moments of fear, courage, and the unyielding spirit of her community. Her stories painted pictures of her family hiding from the Germans, the bravery of neighbors, and the resilience of the human spirit in terrifying times.
At the young age of 17, following the passing of her mother, Grace took on the responsibilities of caring for her younger siblings with maturity beyond her years, guided by her father's love and a steadfast faith that would continue to shape her life's journey. A dedicated member of the Christian Reformed Church, she embraced both her Friesian heritage and the greater Christian faith, speaking three languages fluently: Friesian, Dutch, and English.
Her journey took a significant turn in the 1960s when Grace embarked on an adventure to Canada as a skilled nurse, fulfilling a need for skilled labor. There she met her husband, Dirk Smits, while attending English classes. They wed on December 24, 1966, embarking on a life together rooted in mutual affection and shared values.
Grace's life was characterized by her formidable faith and her passion for sharing the Gospel of Jesus. In the late 1970s, she learned Evangelism Explosion and actively participated in door-to-door outreach, bringing many, including her own children, to the Lord. Her home was a testament to her dedication, welcoming Bible studies and serving as a haven of heartfelt discussion and spiritual growth.
Her devotion in serving and following Jesus was evident in her daily life, with fond memories of Grace at her kitchen table, Bible open, deep in the study of Scripture. An ardent prayer warrior, she was convinced that the prayers she whispered kept her loved ones safe and guided them through life's challenges.
Grace leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and resilience. She navigated life's challenges with grace and was a beacon of perseverance and kindness to all who knew her. Her stories, particularly about her wartime experiences and her subsequent life in Canada and then in the United States since 1980, serve as a testament to her strength and the indomitable spirit of her generation.
Her passing leaves a legacy wrapped in love, courage, and deep spiritual conviction. Grace Smits was not only an exemplary matriarch to her family but also an enduring example of faith, generosity, and the power of prayer. Her spirit now rests in perfect peace and joy, embraced by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whom she dearly cherished.
Grace's memory will be celebrated and cherished by her family, friends, and all who had the joy of encountering her unwavering faith and boundless love.
