Maryann Fulcher Obituary

On Monday, January 23, 2023, Maryann (Mimi) Volpitto Fulcher, at peace and surrounded by her loving family, went Home to be with her Savior, Lord, and friend. She was born July 4, 1939, in Augusta, Georgia as the first of three children born to Mary Elizabeth Stevens and Perry Paul Volpitto, She was born two years after Perry became founder and Chief of the school of Anesthesiology at the Medical College of Georgia.

Mimi attended William Robinson Elementary School, Langford Junior High, and graduated from Richmond Academy High School in 1957. She attended the University of Georgia her freshman year and later graduated in 1962 with a degree in Elementary Education from Georgia State College in Atlanta. She and Simeon (Sim) Bell Fulcher were married in 1958.

Mimi is survived by Sim, her loving husband of 64 years, and their children: Mary Elizabeth (Betsy) Fulcher Laboe, Katherine Fulcher Pugh, and Dr. Simeon Marcus (Mark) Fulcher. Mimi is also survived by nine grandchildren, Benjamin Hunter Pugh (Courtney), Elizabeth Anne Pugh, and Sarah Pugh Wilson (Will), Maryann Laboe, Daniel Kevin Laboe, Joshua Marcus Fulcher, Katherine Bell Fulcher, Perry Elizabeth Fulcher, and Lucy Claire Fulcher. In addition, she is survived by two brothers: Perry Paul Volpitto Jr. (Barbara) and George David Volpitto (Donna). (And their Cocker Spaniel, Mala.)

While Mimi and Sim lived in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where Sim was an associate pastor, Mimi was an elementary school teacher. Later when they moved to Louisville, Kentucky, she became branch manager for PNC Bank - a position she held for 20 years.

Later in Honolulu, Hawaii, Mimi and Sim taught classes on marriage at First Presbyterian Church where Sim served as a pastor for 15 years. Mimi co-authored with Sim In writing "Door to a Lasting Marriage," a book published in 2019 documenting their trials and triumphs in hopes that many marriages would be helped and encouraged.

Upon retirement in 2015 and the move back to Augusta after 60 years away, Mimi enjoyed reconnecting with her childhood girlfriends who have remained loyal to one another through the years. Her most important job has been to be a good mom. Her most abundant joy has been to discover a truly good retail sale.

Her greatest delight has been that of giving to others. And the hero of her life has been the God who made and loved her and gave his Son that she might know Him and be with Him forever. Young Life has been instrumental in Mimi's life. She not only came to know God through Young Life but through its ministry is where Mimi and Sim met.

The celebration of Mimi's life will be held on Saturday, January 28, at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church Augusta. The interment will follow at Westover Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Young Life Augusta, 2249-B Walton Way, Augusta, GA. 30904. (https://augusta.younglife.org/)

Aloha Sim,

Wow...what a special service we witnessed today. We felt the presence of Mimi as we watched from our home on a grey and rainy morning. (Lots of people don´t think we have Winter in Hawai´i.). Another day that the Lord has made for rejoicing, even during our sadness. So many memories flooded back and are present with us hours later. Why am I writing in reply to this 3-month old blog post? Well, I was searching for pictures and emails of/from both of you. (This is more challenging because Apple wiped out my hard drive a few months ago and I don´t know if I´ll ever recover everything.). I had drafted a reply to this post with only the word "Aloha" as a salutation; not sure why I didn´t finish it. I noticed the "Words Fitly Spoken" in the title and realized how appropriate they were for this day.

The blog post title, "I´m so Glad You Were Born" is so ridiculously appropriate for today that I think God may actually be guiding my computer (which is not always good or kind). From the day we met you and Mimi at First Prez, you enhanced, enlightened, enlivened, enriched, and elevated our lives in innumerable ways.

"Words fitly spoken" truly abounded today. Mimi surely loved hearing all of them and reveled in the relative brevity of all of the tributes. I´m sure she said "My" many times! I cannot single out a favorite quote but your words, steeped in a lifelong and eternal love, were marvelous and moving. And as the blog post said, the words were spontaneous, salient, and sincere (not spontaneous, in honor of Mimi). As you wrote, "One of the blessings of God (as this seems to be) is being blessed to be a blessing." That´s worthy of an AMEN!

To honor Mimi with brevity, I shall close here (for now).

We here honored to join all nature, and those who love Mimi, in manifold witness today. May our lives continue to bear witness to this wonderful woman of God. Great is Thy faithfulness indeed!

Aloha...Blessings...Scott

From Tom and Anita:
So glad we got to spend 15 years with Sim & Mimi in Hawaii and to grow in faith with them. It was joyful and educational to attend their marriage class many years ago. We learned a lot, such as the importance of forgiveness and the unclogging of pipes.
From Anita:
Mimi was indeed a direct, no nonsense kind of woman - my kind of woman! What a blessing to have spent 2 days together in October, 2022 in Augusta. And I got to go shopping with Mimi, one of her favorite activities.

We will miss her greatly but know she is in heaven with the Almighty One.

I was saddened to hear of Mimi´s passing. I have fond memories of Mimi when I attended First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu. I´m blessed to have known her. I´m sharing photos taken at the celebration for Sim´s 50th anniversary as a pastor (2014) and at his retirement party in 2015. Sim and family, you´re in my prayers. Mimi, a hui ho, malama pono.
With deepest sympathy,

It was a true Joy to know Mimi in our small group that met in Manoa in 2005. She was always helpful and knowledgeable to those of us who were learning about being Christian in everyday life. I felt sad when Mimi and Sim returned to their beloved South, but what a gift to them to be with relatives and lifelong friends. Their time in Hawaii was meaningful for all. Blessings, Nancy Van Allen

Dear Sweet Mimi - we got called to let us know you are in His arms in heaven. We are so sad and it was so shocking and devastated us to the core. We immediately prayed for you, Sim and your beautiful family. I spent much of the day thinking of our wonderful years together and all the fun things we did and all the long talks we had. We sent off a card to you yesterday as we did not know what had happened. I hope Sim and your family can read our words and know how much your were so deeply loved. We considered you our family. I scrounged around looking or some photos of our lunches together, dinner when Roy himself came to meet Sim and Congratulate him on his 50th year of ministry and retirement. What a night that was. So while I am so very sad I just thought I would share the photos with whomever reads this. May God keep you in His arms, you are home and the lovely life you led here on earth will always be remembered as one of love, compassion, family and appreciation of wonderful things. I still remember our week when I helped you with the value and inventory of your home, what a great week that was. I love you forever dear friend nothing will ever change that and Sim too. You made our lives so full and rich and strengthened our faith in Christ and marriage. Love forever!
