Thomas Abney Obituary
A Celebration of Life will occur at a later date.
Dr. Abney was born in Eustis, Florida in 1943 to Dewy and Mildred Sutton Abney, but grew up in Nashville, Georgia. He attended schools in Berrien County, graduating in 1961. To further his higher education, Tom attended Barry College, Valdosta State University and the University of Georgia where he earned a PhD in Biochemistry. After completing a post doctorate at the University of Texas in Austin, Dr. Abney began his career at the Medical College of Georgia in the Department of Physiology as a research scientist. After 30 years of service, Dr. Abney retired as honorary professor emeritus.
Dr. Abney was a member of the Augusta University Retiree Association, serving in several office positions.
In addition to his wife, Jeanie, he is survived by his daughter/granddaughter, Hannah Abney; stepson Brian (Nesa) Godbee; step grandson Jordan (Cydny) Godbee; his two sisters Joy Ann (Ted) Lindsey and Evelyn NeSmith; sister-in-law, Jan Abney; four nieces and nephews; and three great niece and nephews.
Dr. Abney is preceded in death by his parents; his newborn twins, Olivia and Thomas Abney; his daughter, Shannon Butler; and two brothers, Jim and Bill Abney.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests you make a donation in Dr. Abney's memory to your favorite charity.
