William Wylie Obituary

Dr. William Joseph Wylie passed away at home during the early morning hours of May 18, 2024. Dr. (Bill) Wylie was born on July 12, 1950, in Augusta, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Moffatt Hardeman (Hardt) Wylie, Sr. and Ethal von Poellnitz Wylie and his two older brothers Moffatt Hardeman (Hardy) Wylie, Jr. and Ernest Miller (Teaky) Wylie.

Bill is survived by Ann Morton, his Annie, nephew Moffatt Hardeman (Trey) Wylie, III, niece Jane Seabrook (Brook) Wylie Wilson (Billy), nephew Wayne Carlisle Wylie (Mandy), great nephews Matt, Davis and Hardy Wilson, and great nieces Carli and Evie Wylie.

Bill was born and raised in Augusta, GA and graduated from the Academy of Richmond County in 1968. He played varsity football throughout high school and remained close to his fellow teammates. As a ROTC member, he was awarded the Sheridan Sabre award as the most outstanding cadet. From there he attended Augusta College '68-'70 and transferred to the University of Georgia. In 1972 he graduated Cum Laude with a BS degree in Zoology from UGA where he was a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He was a lifelong supporter of the Georgia Bulldogs.

He then graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in 1976 with a MD degree. His internship followed in Greenville, SC '76-'77. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia in '79. Finally, Bill completed a fellowship in Cardiology from the Medical College of Georgia in '81. He was Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular diseases.

During his professional career, Bill held the following positions: Clinical Instructor at MCG, Department of Cardiology Chief at University Hospital 1987-2007, Department of Medicine Chairman at Trinity Hospital, Director of Cardiac Cath Lab at Trinity Hospital, Department of Cardiology Chairman at Trinity Hospital. Scientific and Professional Societies include; American College of Chest Physicians-Fellow, American College of Angiology-Fellow, American College of Cardiology-Fellow, Medical Association of Georgia-Member, and Richmond County Medical Society-Member. He held State licensures to practice medicine in South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, and Montana.

Dr. Wylie opened his private practice in Cardiology on July 1, 1981 and retired June 30, 2023. He was a beloved physician and cared deeply about each of his patients.

Bill was an active member of The Augusta Country Club and the New York Athletic Club.

Though he earned many titles throughout his life, his favorite title was "Uncle Bill". He was fiercely loyal and protective of his family and those he loved. However, the title "Uncle Bill" was affectionately extended to the many friends he acquired and mentored over the years.

While there were always things needing to be done, "Uncle Bill" lived in the moment enjoying the company of family and friends day or night when opportunities arose.

He purchased a beach house at Edisto known by all as WJs Place. This retreat was always so full of family, friends, and love.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 516 West Ave, North Augusta, SC 29841.

A graveside service will be held Friday, May 24, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. in Westover Memorial Park with Chaplain Wade Sosebee officiating. Immediately following, the family will receive friends at 3037 Park Avenue.

My condolences to Ann Morton and the Wylie Family. I knew Dr. Wylie from working in the Respiratory/Cardiology and Vascular as a receptionist/transcriber, at St. Joseph Hospital back in the late 80s. I will never forget his smile or him. Rest in Peace Dr. Wylie.

Bill, or as I called him, "Willimo," was my best friend from school days, having first met in 1961 when we moved to Augusta from Africa when we both were in 6th grade at Forest Hills. We both enjoyed goofing around in the outdoors, sometimes going shooting at his family cabin with my Dad. When I moved back to Augusta from France in 1967 for our senior year at ARC, he was so welcoming, making sure I always had a place to sit at his table during lunch. We stayed in minimal touch over the years, until I retired 8 years ago, then we renewed our friendship with gusto, getting together whenever I passed through Augusta, and once at his Edisto beach house. Through all those 63 years of friendship, he was always so generous and considerate of friends and family. I just learned of his passing this week, after noticing I hadn't gotten a Fourth of July text from him - he always sent me a text on even the smallest of holidays. I miss him terribly and will always hold him close in my heart and in my fondest memories.

I always called Bill Wylie "Billy", we went to school together. As children, we came from different economic areas of Augusta; nonetheless, he treated me as a friend. As we became adults, our friendship never wavered. Billy was someone that we all looked to as a loyal friend.

I am saddened to hear of his passing, and will miss him. I pray that we all, family, friends, or associates will cherish fond memories of good times spent with him, and look forward to being reunited with Billy, once again, in eternity.
