George Stafford Obituary

George William Stafford, age 90, passed away on Monday, November 12, 2024. He was born on August 21, 1934, in Cumberland MD to the late George Andrew Stafford and Clementine Katherine Duckworth Stafford. George graduated from Fort Hill High School in Cumberland. He then served in the United States Army, where he was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne division. After he served in the Army, George went to work at Springfield Hospital Center as an LPN where he met his wife Fern Pauline Sage Stafford, where they both worked until their retirement in 1984, after 35 years of nursing. George was a longtime member of the Sykesville Volunteer Fire Department and also the Sykesville American Legion Post 223. After their retirement in 1984, they started Stafford's Produce. The produce stand began at the former Renehan's Apple Butter Factory, then moved to their location on Rt. 32 between Sykesville and Flohrville and to the current location on Liberty Road at Klee Mill Road. George enjoyed spending time with his family, water skiing and boating. He loved to take care of his farm animals and deeply loved his pets, Holly, Fritz, Kortney and Ruger. George is survived by his daughter, Dianna Lynne Stafford; grandsons who considered him their father, Cameron Baker and Colin Baker and significant other Savannah Stull and siblings Sara Jane Twigg, Betty Jean Brown and companion Steve Fairgrave and Joseph Leroy Stafford and wife Kim. He was predeceased by siblings Eddie Stafford and Esther K. Cowgill and brothers-in-law Leroy Cowgill and Donald Twigg. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm on Monday, November 18, 2024, at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville where a funeral service will be held at 12pm on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 13135 Forsythe Rd. Sykesville, MD 21784.
