Edwin Aylette Mayo, M.D.
Edwin Aylette Mayo, M.D., 88, "Dr. Mayo," peacefully passed away in the early hours of Aug. 24, 2025, surrounded by his wife, Diane; beloved canine companion, Beau; and loving family, at his home on St. Simons Island. He will be remembered for his faith, compassion, humility and the countless lives he touched throughout his years as a husband, medical doctor, mentor and friend.
Edwin was born on April 28, 1937, in Richmond, Virginia. He was the beloved son of Minnie Morriss and Aylette Howard Mayo. From a young age, he demonstrated both discipline and drive. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1955, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets, an experience that instilled in him a sense of leadership and responsibility. He was an avid pool shark and chess player. He went on to pursue higher education at Richmond College, earning his Bachelor of Science in 1958, before achieving his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1962. That same year, he was licensed to practice medicine and surgery by the Virginia Board of Medicine.
His medical journey began at the Medical College of Virginia, where he served as resident staff. Soon after, his call to serve extended to the United States Army. In 1963, he completed the Officer Basic Course at the U.S. Army Medical Field Service School, later serving as Captain in the Medical Corps. Dr. Mayo was stationed with the Army at the U.S. Army Hospital at Fort Stewart, Georgia. His Honorable Discharge in 1965 marked the end of his military service, but the sense of duty he carried never left him.
In 1967, Dr. Mayo was named a Fellow and Life Member of the American Academy of Family Physicians - a recognition of both his skill and devotion to the practice of medicine. On June 11, 1965, he was licensed to practice medicine and surgery in Georgia and shortly thereafter moved to Brunswick, Georgia, where he joined Drs. C. A. Wilson and M. G. Smith in their general medicine practice. On July 1, 1970, he established his private practice, Edwin A. Mayo, M.D., in the State of Georgia. Over the course of his career, he cared for countless patients, often delivering multiple generations of children into this world as an obstetrician, and providing attentive, thoughtful care as a family physician. His patients knew him not as just their doctor, but as a steady, reassuring presence in their lives. Dr. Mayo was caring and compassionate. For many years he was also "on call" with Charter by the Sea, alongside Dr. Eric Bournigal, further extending his healing touch to his community.
Dr. Mayo's life was not only defined by medicine but also by the relationships he nurtured. He was deeply devoted to his family and the love of his life, Diane, whose love and support sustained him throughout the last 30 years. Known for his humanity and quiet strength, he led by example - showing kindness, patience and generosity in all he did.
Dr. Mayo was preceded in death by his parents, Minnie Morriss and Aylette Howard Mayo.
He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Diane; his constant companion, Beau; children, Laura Simpson (Russ) of Savannah, Elizabeth Watts (Dennis) of Savannah, Heather Tucker (Alan) of St. Simons Island, Kelly Edgy (Marcus) of St. Simons Island and Brad Campbell (Lacy) of St. Simons Island; grandchildren, Lemuel Watts, Nathan Watts, Reny Halverson, Hunter Halverson (Addison), Hugh Edgy, Ella-Kate Edgy, Jackson Campbell, Scottland Campbell, Hazel Campbell, Olivia Power and Dr. A.J. Tucker (Carmela); and great-grandchildren, Eliana and David Tucker. His family takes comfort in knowing that his legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched.
